I know The Expanse has almost exclusively cast relatively unknown actors but who would you cast for large characters we haven't seen in the show?

Edit: I'm all for casting (relatively) unknown actors, by the way. Just thought it would be fun speculating which better known names would fit some characters :)

Books vs Show (lemmy.zip)

So I'm listening through the audiobooks, and am on book 5. Should I finish the series before watching the show?

“Light, as I’m sure you know, is a membrane phenomenon on the surface of time”

Leviathan Falls James S. A. Corey

I don’t know what this means. For context, the side character explains it’s what allows the gate builders to act as a hive mind even though there is time delay in the speed of light.

No spoilers allowed. Only Ep 1 or 2 discussed here.

What are/were your impressions of the first 2 episodes?

I am liking the strong casting, plausible off-world conflicts and resource scarcity evaluations.

May require more hard science or physics for full immersion. Can someone explain the reason for Holden's wrench to go flying?

I've read other posts on places like Quora or Reddit about how ineffective lasers would be as anti personal or anti ship weaponry, but what about for point defense? We see cases in the story of the PDCs running out of ammo/jamming/other mechanical failures. Theoretically, lasers would be less prone to such issues as there are fewer moving parts, right? Contemporary militaries have (sea/air) ship mounted lasers to destroy or jam incoming missiles, so why wouldn't this work in space? I understand people or ships could have ablative armor but would that be practical on a missile? PDLs would not be subject to running out of ammo, and if ships can power railguns they should be able to provide ample power for lasers capable of slagging or jamming incoming missiles.

Warning: the following contains spoilers for the following works:

The Expanse, S01E01-S03E10. Abaddon's Gate (Book 3), James S.A. Corey Three-Body Problem &The Dark Forest, Cixin Liu

If you want to try it out, read 5 books and watch almost three seasons of television.

. . . .

!!The ring gates are a Dark Forest weapons system. If this was clear to others, and I'm catching up, well, I'm slow. But, I just found out about Brin (1983).!!

Then, I got it. It's such a well-structured Whatsit.

I feel pretty good about this realization. I'm glad that these works work so well together.

Ring gates

Razerback

I've tried to upload pretty high quality, but you might be able to find higher quality from reverse image search. I've got some more too that I might post in the future.

I'm 75% of the way through the last book in the series. I've read all of the novellas. What would you recommend next?

Three only other series I can think of that's similar is the Three Body series from Cixin Liu.

There's a new novel, "How it Unfolds" by James SA Corey, which is unrelated to The Expanse.

It looks like it's part of an Amazon exclusive book series "The Far Reaches". I hope it'll be available by other means in the future.

Title pretty much covers it, hit me with any questions, loved the build, but took about 6 months, wouldn’t touch it for stretches.

Its my first run and I'm currently in the middle of Season 2 (episode 8: Pyre) so if the situation changes after that please don't spoiler me.

spoilerAm I wrong that I really don't like the Belter?

They are so unorganized and aggressive and only out for themselves.

After Fred Johnson acquired the 30 Nukes as a contingency to defend the Belt against Mars and Earth, why are the leaders of the belt so daft and actually want to use them against the inner planets? Then that stupid mutiny against him after they kidnapped the remaining doctor.

And then that atrocity after Ganymede, where the Freighter simply ejected people from the inner planets when they were told to move to a different freighter. That was truly gut-wrenching.

Also, I'm quite sad but also happy that Miller sacrificed himself in Eros and be with Julie Mao for their final journey to Venus.

Besides that I would say that I fell in love with the series, the setting, the people and everything.

Sorry if my posts to the community come off spammy, just want to build some content here for any new members looking for an Expanse community on Lemmy.

Chris Danelon, one of the VR designers from The Expanse television show has released another video with more very interesting content from Season 1 of The Expanse that I have not seen. The video includes interviews with the cast about their characters and their relationships.

He shows the hard to find clips from the Season 1 marketing material and then gives some additional commentary from his experience on the show.

This is a short Sci-Fi story set outside the world of The Expanse by our beloved authors behind James S.A. Corey. I haven't picked up the next books in the series by various other Sci-Fi authors yet, but How It Unfolds was excellent and I am still thinking about the story many days later. The life lessons are valuable, especially for me at this time in my life.

Anyone read it? Opinions? Anyone read the next ones in the series yet?

Whatever it is, I'm here for it. I still need to get my hands on the new comic books and I will be playing the Telltale game. I'm still holding onto hope we will see an end to the series in some video format in the future.

Title..., but also again this is kinda how I though that the internet was in the expanse where each station each planet and each ship kinda worked. Now we are the people traveling from one station to another and connecting the servers and the leaving for some other place, I really can't wait to see the fediverse grow to the scales of the expanse
