Reddit account for 13+ years. Constantly prompted to provide email. Have no desire to have any personal information in it whatsoever, so never provided any. However, it is the only account I've ever used for extensive long term discussion and community involvement. Thousands of comments in discussions with other folks on topics I'm interested in. Logged in from many different locations and platforms over the years. Opted to never enter an email. Have never forgotten password, never needed to reset password. Didn't care about recovery. If the account is lost, so be it. Logged in recently to a banner saying my account has been "suspended for suspicious activity security reasons" and the above message. The only way to recover the account is to "reset the password by entering an email". Created a random anonymous email online, entered it as a fresh new email never provided before, reset link shows up in email, reset password, back in the account.

If I had to make a cynical skeptical guess - looks like an obvious stunt in advance of the IPO to grab a bunch of emails for accounts that didn't have emails in order to drive up account metrics used for valuation. Side note, I did receive the IPO invitation.

I spend more time on Lemmy now because the phone apps are awesome. I only hang on to Reddit because there are some communities that exist there that don't have Lemmy equivalents. But I have been thinking about running one of those account comment / post scramblers and then deleting. This is bringing me closer to that decision.

Asking because I got it and I'm not really sure what to do. So, I wanted to see what strangers on the internet are going to do.

I don't have an existing e-trade account and I'm not super excited about creating one for the singular purpose of this IPO. But, if I can quickly make a couple of bucks and then cash out, that might be worth it.

Are there rules to when you cash out if you get in at the IPO price? Could I buy-in at the $30-ish/share price and couple that with a trailing stop-loss order? Maybe this isn't the right Lemmy community to ask this, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

What's next: Reddit is likely to go public next week.

I don't give a shit about reddit's DP program.

I loaded a page on reddit due to a search result and found out that I'm among the chosen few. Message sent yesterday. They must've gotten fewer takers than expected on the first round of invites if they're now offering shares to people who haven't posted, commented, voted, or done anything else on the site for the past 8 months.

I think I finally reached my breaking point with reddit (about time). Earlier this month the humorless admins of /r/teslamotors banned me for posting a video of my custom charge port cover. A day or so later I mistakenly posted on the sub using my secondary account. That's on me. The /r/teslamotors admins gave me a permaban and reddit gave me 7 day site ban. I can take my lumps so whatever.

However, apparently I commented today on /r/teslamotors using the account that received the permaban. Dumbass reddit gave me another 7 day site ban for ban evasion. WTF? Either a software bug allowed me to comment or /r/teslamotors lifted my ban for some reason.

Neither of those constitute ban evasion IMHO. I'm also tired of using old.reddit.com in phone browser since they killed apis.

We’re offering a Directed Share Program (“DSP”) that invites eligible users and moderators who have contributed to Reddit to participate in our initial public offering (“IPO”). (Including you!)

Program Requirements While being selected to pre-register is the first step, there are certain legal and regulatory requirements to participate in the DSP that are outside of Reddit’s control. Bear with us here…

To be eligible for the DSP, you must:

Be a current U.S. resident;
