I blasted ahead with 19 points in the first two chapters, which lead to everyone ganging up on me. Managed to squeek out a second place finish though.

We played with the Legends, Through the Seasons, Corrin Evertail, and Extra Extra! mini expansions. I haven't played with the bigger expansions very much, but these little modules definitely make the base game a lot more interesting without adding too much more complexity.

Just ran across this in the newcommunities discussion. Figured I'd jump start a thread for people to chime in on.

  • What have you been playing lately?
  • Anything you're looking forward to?
  • What do you wish you could play, but never have the time or players?

My Root box is quite big, because it's the french edition so it includes the Root automatons, and the first expansion (Lizards and Otters).

I think the smallest box i have is Complots which is a french version of Coup, with squared cards, it fits in one hand.

For many people, learning the rules of any unfamiliar board game can feel as alien as learning a brand new language. Yet few games make that experience quite as literal as City of Six Moons. Its rulebook arrives written in a mysterious series of symbols that players must translate before they can play the game itself – and may never know if they’ve got everything right.

I generally like traditional card games, trick taking games and ladder-climbing games. Some favourites include Tichu, Ninety-nine and Haggis. Recently I have had a lot of fun playing a new ladder-climbing game for 2 players called Crisps. I have mainly played online on Board Game Arena. Ladder-climbing games is generally not very suited to two players, with some exception, and Crisps is one of them.

The object of the game is to empty the hand, but every time one player passes the winning player chooses between a face-up card and a face-down card, giving the opponent the other. Thus, the hand gradually fills up and must be planned for. The combinations in the game strikes a nice balance between strictness and flexibility.

Would whole-heartedly recommend it.

I recently got the Asia expansion for Wingspan and I've been really enjoying the Duet board. It adds a whole new layer of strategy that really makes you have to pay attention to the birds you're playing.

  • Obsession (2.1e) is a 1~4 player, 90mins, competitive, worker placement game (bgg link)
  • player play as mid 19th century Victorian upper class families
  • each family (player) competing to better their social position, reputation and family fortune by building new rooms/venues and hosting successful social events with the help of their servants staff (worker meeples) they hire along the game
  • there is also a goal of attracting the most elligible gentleman and lady in the county to marry into their family for more prestige
  • its like Downton Abbey (TV series) the game
  • playthroughs and tutorials: JonGetsGames, Heavy Cardboard, Rahdo

the kickstarter (~$50, 8 days left)

  • does not contain the base game. only the latest expansion and optional gold coins
  • this is the 3rd expansion and supposedly last (source: trust me bro)
    • excl. the upgrade pack from 2e to 2.1e
    • there is supposedly another game planned in the Obsession universe which use some of the tiles in Obsession (source)
  • will be available retail, no kickstarter exclusives it seems

besides having been interested in the game and theme for a long time, i thought the video was an interesting watch going over the issues with how boardgame kickstarters are these days

recently, it was announced one-time only deluxified version of Food Chain Magnate (FCM) would be held on Gamefound (campaign not launched yet) featuring a different art style than the infamous Spotter Spellen game known for its retro yet functional graphic design which some felt was so bad refused to play it despite it receiving critical acclaim

  • the deluxe by Lucky Duck Games on Gamefound will run concurrently with sales of the original on Splotter (prices are predicted to cost no less than the original)
  • there are plans to introduce deluxe version of the FCM expansion
  • there will not be an upgrade pack for owners of the original version of FCM
  • English only deluxe, because of distribution rights
  • this isnt the first time a Splotter game received an art refresh, Bus received an English only 20th anniversary in 2019. with another title, Ur: 1830 BC getting a re-release pending a popularity vote

meanwhile unrelatedly, a fan-made laser-cut 3D standee tiles was also released on Game Crafters earlier this month for those wanting to deluxify their copy while retaining the original's unique aesthetic appeal

question for all you Beeple and Fediversers - im curious which style of deluxe do you prefer if any? the Lucky Duck Games deluxe, or the fan-made laser-cut 3D standee tiles

Announcing bgammon.org (online multiplayer backgammon)

I have developed an entirely free and open source multiplayer backgammon service.

You can try it out by visiting https://bgammon.org or by connecting via SSH:

ssh bgammon.org -p 5000

I would very much appreciate help with testing and feedback from anyone who knows how to play backgammon, or is interested in learning. The rules of backgammon are available here:

https://bkgm.com/rules.html

The password prompt is currently non-functional, and private lobbies are not yet available. Otherwise, the service is ready to test out, particularly the accuracy of the backgammon simulation. Because there are no accounts yet, everyone is logged in as a guest.

A terminal-based client is available, and a graphical client is planned. The terminal-based client is available over the web at the link above. This is accomplished by using GoTTY.

Move pieces by dragging them or by clicking a source space and then a destination space. You may make multiple moves by dragging a checker directly to its final destination.

The source code is available here: server & client.

Feel free to contact me directly at trevor@rocket9labs.com with test results and feedback.

Hello everybody!

When I initially created this community, there wasn't a place to discuss board games on Lemmy yet. I set up this server on sopuli.xyz because many people were gravitating towards lemmy.ml and I wanted to help counteract that somewhat, even in a minor way.

That said, activity here has been next to non-existent. The community over at boardgames@feddit.de has surpassed this one in every way. Personally, I'm fine with this, so I have decided to close this community and recommend people join that community instead. At the time being, there isn't a compelling reason for this community to exist as an alternative.

Should this change, I will reopen the community. That said, if anyone else wishes to take over this community, I would be happy to hand it over to them. Until then, goodbye!

Iron Rail 4 Kickstarter is up. (www.kickstarter.com)

I've been waiting for a reprint of South African Rails for awhile now. I played it awhile back at a con and had a great time, so it's nice to see it get a wider release alongside some maps.

Hi, me and my cousins had a good thing going for a long time playing Catan but we are looking to shake things up. We have played Catan regularly for over s year, but find that it's getting a little stale. We are looking for a game that requires a lot of strategy, planning, teamwork but also betrayal and backstabbing, yet also not take half an hour to set up and dismantle.

In Catan we love that the board changes every game and therefore the strategy, but found that once we got to the castles and knights expansion there was one strategy that beat out all the rest which sort of deflated the fun (first person to get science bonus seemed to win 90% of the time).

Any other board games out there for beginners that don't take forever to set up and put away? Not huge into role playing, but never say never I guess.

I'm not expecting a whole lot, but looking forward to getting out with the gang. Have never played something where you toss pieces.

Then it never left my shelf. It just seems like the same game over and over, thoughts?

After reading how much everyone loves War of the Ring and having it recommended to me multiple times I decided to see if I could find it at a local store and avoid Amazon. Lucky for me my main store I use had 1 copy!
