I bought a new-in-box LG V20 about 18 months ago because I was tired of phones without removable batteries and headphone jacks. However, it gets absolutely terrible reception for some reason (as in, no signal in the middle of Manhattan). Some guy had the same problem and he soldered a big antenna to his phone to fix it. I might try to do that but given how great I am at soldering, there's a good chance I'll break the phone. Should I do it? I don't want to have to buy a modern phone with a built-in battery but I can't just have a phone which doesn't work when I'm away from wi-fi...

For years I have been using daily Bing wallpaper app which used to automatically fetch the day's Bing wallpaper and set it for lockscreen and home screen. The home screen wallpaper used to be in "landscape", i.e. it was scrollable. The latest update has removed the setting for scrollable wallpaper to be set automatically. I can live without Bing images, but please suggest wallpaper autochanger which would set lockscreen and home screen from the internet and would be scrollable on the home screen. In the last few hours I have tried several apps, but did not find any which is scrollable. I tried Google wallpapers and it's scrollable, but is not setting on lock screen

So I've just ordered the newly announced Z Fold and Watch, and noticed after ordering that the sales tax on Samsung's invoice is higher than my local sales tax rate. My billing and shipping address are both in Seattle, WA, which has a state+county+city sales tax rate of 10.25%, but Samsung charged 11.275%.

Posting here (1) as a PSA for others to check their invoice, and (2) wondering if there's some obvious thing I missed.

The order is as follows (payment summary screenshot attached to this post):

  • Galaxy Z Fold 512GB: $749.99
    • original $1919.99, -$120 free storage upgrade, -$1000 for iPhone 14 Pro Max trade in, -$50 for reserve credit
  • Samsung Care+: $167.30
    • original $239, -$71.70 "limited time" discount
  • Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 43mm LTE: $225
    • original $449.99, -$224.99 bundle discount

So, subtotal is $1142.29 as expected. Sales tax in my location is 10.25% (verified here), so the sales tax should $117.08, but instead it's $128.79, $11.71 higher than it should be.

Oddly, it's off by exactly 10% (of the expected sales tax amount).

I contacted chat support and all they could do was file a ticket internally and tell me they'll follow up in 2 business days. Screenshots of chat support: https://imgur.com/a/bdAaot7

Is it still safe to use as long as apps continue to be updated and is supported by the play store?

How long would you say someone could safely use an Android phone that no longer gets security updates for?

EDITED: As I am not in a rush, I've decided that my budget is now $500.

I am picky about the features I look for in a smartphone. Hopefully this post can be a good resource for myself and others who have similar preferences. For reference, I am using a Oneplus 7 Pro with a non-functional camera and flashlight.

Very important features

Battery life

It should handle a day's worth of general usage before charging. Heat kills batteries, so decent heat dissipation is important too.

Durability or repairability

I recently bought a Google Pixel 5a, a phone I greatly enjoyed before I dropped it 5 feet and the display decided its work was done. My top priority is to have a useable device for ~5 years before needing an upgrade.

Storage

I like storing my music collection (30 GB and growing) and expandable storage would save me from having to carry a DAP (mp3 player). Without expandable storage it should have 256 GB storage.

Price

Electronics aren't meant to last a long time; I'd prefer devices costing ~300 USD, but I would gladly pay a little more for reliability.

Microphone

Please let me be intelligible on phone calls. Please? Pretty please?

Software updates or custom ROM support

OS updates for 3+ years or resources on XDA for flashing a custom ROM. Ideally LineageOS.

Would be nice

Root capability

It's a bit dated nowadays, but I really do appreciate having that extra bit of control. This also ties into custom ROM support.

Fingerprint Sensor

I loved the dedicated fingerprint sensor on my Pixel 5a. Power button fingerprints are worse, but better than nothing. Typing in my passcode every time is a bit of a pain.

Speakers

Preferably dual front facing stereo speakers. Having some decent output for videos when I don't have anything else with me would be nice.

OLED/AMOLED display

Makes stuff WAY easier to see when the sun's all sunny.

Processing power

I don't play phone games. I watch a lot of media and I message people. Must be capable of simultaneously running muliple apps and background services.

IPA ratings

It'd be pretty sick if I could bring it with me in the shower without worrying about water damage.

Fast charging

Won't always use it, but it'd be great to have.

Cutting corners

Screen resolution

I don't need a 4K display. Hell, I don't need a 1080p display. If it cuts costs, 720p is just fine so long as it looks okay.

Size

It can be big or small, thick or thin. Not picky.

Other features I don't need

Headphone jack, NFC, 5G, wireless charging

The phones I am looking at right now are as follows

  • Sony Xperia 10 V - No custom ROM support, long term durability is unclear.
  • Fairphone 4 - Slightly out of price range.
  • Samsung Galaxy XCover6 Pro - Way out of price range. I would appreciate any input or questions.

Favourite Launchers (self.askandroid)

Hey all, newbie to the Lemmy, signed up recently.

Also a relative android newbie, I've had a pixel 6 for about a year and a half.

I've played around with tasker, KWGT, KLWP, and all kinds of other power-user techie apps, so I'm reasonably confident in my ability to tinker with my phone.

I've been experimenting with my launcher, having gone with stock pixel launcher for my first half, and then using Lawnchair 12 for the second half, I wanted to try something new.

So, I open the floor up to you guys! What launcher are you using, what do you enjoy, and most importantly, why do you enjoy it? What sets your launcher apart?

As I'm not using it actively for months and want to stop using it, I want to delete my Twitter account. However I still have one use-case that prevents me doing that. My city local police is sending some traffic related news only on Twitter and I use the notification functionality of Twitter official client to be informed as soon as they post something.

I have tested some open source Twitter client which works pretty well for looking at content in my opinion but none of them have the capacity to push a notification when a post is done in a specific followed account.

Do you have some recommendations (it would be best if it's open source but I'm not completely closed to "free as in free beer" alternatives) ?

Thanks.

Ahoy all,

I know Samsung's phones don't do it natively (apart from using the actual shutter settings in pro mode), but does anybody know if there's an app that can emulate the iPhone's live photo long exposure effect (as seen here), using Samsung's motion photo function?

On the iPhone, you can open any live photo, then tap a menu option to have it stack each frame to create a long-exposure effect.

Blows my mind that Samsung hasn't dived into this type of thing, especially considering the Pixel now also has some great post-processing motion effects

Cheers!

I just noticed in the overview from my mobile provider that I have apparently sent an SMS message to an unknown (domestic) phone number at 03:10 on July 11. Going back a few months I don't see any other messages to that number.

The number doesn't belong to any of my contacts, it doesn't appear to be a premium number (as there was no charge for texting it) or any number I can even look up. And I can't find the message anywhere in Messages (which is the default SMS handler on my phone) or anywhere else.

Looking at the Permission Manager, only 4 non-system apps are allowed to send and view SMS messages: Google, Google Play Store, Messages and Phone.

So I want to figure out what the hell was happening on my phone that apparently sent a message that doesn't figure anywhere in the middle of the night. I've been trying with dumpsys through adb but I'm having trouble narrowing the dumps down to the relevant date/time and services.

adb shell dumpsys isms had some events from both before and after July 11, but zilch from July 11.

So does anyone know if and how I can figure out what was going on on my phone on July 11 at around 03:10?

Hey all, been looking to curb you YouTube addiction. One easy step would be to get an alternative frontend which does not display shorts, and maybe even does not show suggested videos.

I've been looking at alternatives, but most seem to want you to import subscriptions from YouTube, and I assume that if you subscribe to a new channel from there, it will not show up on your YouTube account. Which is a functionality I would really like, as I also watch on desktop.

So does something like it exist? Or should I just install ReVanced? I've been kind of hesitant because installing from .APK is just so much easier...

iPhone user here:

I'm sorry if this is a really controversial question, but I really enjoy the system-wide transparency and glassUI of iOS. I want to migrate to Android, but the big manufacturers (Samsung, Google, OnePlus, etc) all have a flat UI design by contrast. In my research, the closest I could find is MIUI, but the phones that run MIUI don't support all the carrier bands in the USA. Does android really not have the option of a glassy transparent UI?

I'm trying to create a shortcut to internet connectivity panel using Tasker/Macrodroid.

So far I've learned i need to call ACTION_INTERNET_CONNECTIVITY but I don't know how.

I'm a noob and don't know anything about Android development. Can someone please help?

Update: solved by using this intent: android.settings.panel.action.INTERNET_CONNECTIVITY

Today I installed this widget for toggling wifi/data WITHOUT using the quick settings tiles.

It triggers a bottom pop-up with both data and WiFi settings. What I need is the exact name of this activity to call it with a custom widget I plan to make. Can anyone please help?

Specifically the Onn 10.1" Gen 3, model 100071485? These are cheap, low-powered Walmart house brand tablets that are perfect for fucking around with, and I'm amazed there's not more of a modding community for them.

So here is the issue.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5g running OneUI: 5.1 and Android 13.

I have to keep secure files on my phone for work. So naturally I used the "Secure Folder" ap that comes with the phone. Problem is that while the folder is locked it constantly notifies me to unlock the folder for notifications from aps inside. I figured out how to disable those notifications but there is still this persistent notification every time I restart the phone.

Secure Folder Locked: Unlock your secure folder to get notifications from apps in secure folder.

This normally wouldnt be an issue. Every time I restart the phone I just unlock the folder and then re-secure it. But I just dont think it's very good to have the fact that I have a secure folder on my phone every time it is restarted.

So the question is... 1) Can this notification be turned off or removed? 2) Is there a different app that would work better for securing photos, pdf and text documents?

I contacted samsung support and they told me to deal with it or uninstall the secure folder app. Which isnt the best solution.

I have a decent video player XPlayer from InShot and I would like to add an app that can edit or even create a video from several fragments. Would spend up to $20 or $30 one time payment.

TIA

I'm into Photography as one of my hobbies, but the curse of using a Sony camera is that they don't have GPS built into their bodies. On top of that, their app which is supposed to connect to your camera via bluetooth sucks, and often loses connection randomly (or doesn't get a connection at all) leaving many, or all, photos without GPS data.

Right now, Ive been using 'Geotag Photos 2' which records GPS location data, sends it to their server, then lets you download/tag your photos from a 'trip' with GPS data.

Obviously, I hate that.

I know of OwnTracks, but I don't believe it offers any way to export data to a GPX file for tagging photos with.

I have Home Assistant accessible from the outside, which tracks location, but I don't believe it can be exported to a GPX and I don't believe it records location if it can't "phone home". If Im out on a hike, that would interrupt service and kill the usage of it.

If the app just records data, and doesn't send it to any server, I can live with that - I just want something fully local that isn't sending my location to any companies servers.

I love and use on a daily basis LossllessCut but it's only available on Win/Linux/Mac.

It's an open-source lossless video cutting tool that lets you edit raw footage super quickly

Is there an alternative on Android?

If not any good tools out there to seamlessly AI summarize articles? I'm imagining an app you can just share a URL to that would instantly render a summary for you.

EDIT: THE ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED. APPARENTLY, ALL IT TOOK WAS FOR ME TO RELOGIN TO THE INSTANCES. SED LYF INDEED.

I'm logged into 3 instances, the fossware instance, the lemdroid instance and lemmy.world. But anytime I try to vote or comment on a lemmy.world post, it shows me the "Not Logged In" toast notification.

And for lemdroid, it just does nothing...

Any solution?

I've set a specific provider under the Private DNS setting and it works for the direct connection between the phone and the network, but it won't work on the devices that are connected to the hotspot of my phone, they instead fall back onto the default DNS of my ISP.
Is there a way to force that DNS on all the devices connected?

I've use Twilight for years and love the red filter for using my phone at night. But since getting an AMOLED screen it's started to frustrate me. The way Twilight seems to work means that black also gets a red tint. Previously this was great, but on amoled black is completely dark with no back-light that needs masking with red. So by shifting it red, Twilight is actually making the screen much brighter.

Tldr: Any apps that leave black as black, but give a red tint to all the other colors?
