The Motorola Razr is back, and this time, the company didn't just launch one model. Alongside the flagship Razr+, Motorola also introduced the more standard Razr, which we lovingly refer to as the Razr-. And while this model has some lesser specs when compared to its flagship counterpart, it's still quite an impressive phone and one we think you might want to consider.

The Motorola Razr (Razr 40 in Europe) is not available in North America just yet, and a firm launch date has not been given for the phone. However, it will arrive in the United States and cost "marginally cheaper" than the Razr+ (Razr 40 Ultra in Europe), which starts at $999 in North America. Given that the MSRP for a new clamshell foldable usually sits around that price in this region, Motorola is looking to undercut some of the best foldable phones with the Razr, which could make it an ideal device for anyone looking for their first foldable.

But how does it compare to the Motorola Razr+, and is it worth waiting for? With any luck, our comparison will help you decide.

TL;DR

  • Google has updated its privacy policy.
  • The new policy adds that Google can use publically available data to train its AI products.
  • The way the policy is worded, it sounds as if the company is reserving the right to harvest and use data posted anywhere on the web.

You probably didn’t notice, but Google quietly updated its privacy policy over the weekend. While the wording of the policy is only slightly different from before, the change is enough to be concerning.

As discovered by Gizmodo, Google has updated its privacy policy. While there’s nothing particularly notable in most of the policy, one section now sticks out — the research and development section. That section explains how Google can use your information and now reads as:

Google uses information to improve our services and to develop new products, features and technologies that benefit our users and the public. For example, we use publicly available information to help train Google’s AI models and build products and features like Google Translate, Bard, and Cloud AI capabilities.

Before the update, this section mentioned “for language models” instead of “AI models.” It also only mentioned Google Translate, where it now adds Bard and Cloud AI.

As the outlet points out, this is a peculiar clause for a company to add. The reason why it’s peculiar is that the way it’s worded makes it sound as if the tech giant reserves the right to harvest and use data from any part of the public internet. Usually, a policy such as this only discusses how the company will use data posted on its own services.

While most people likely realize that whatever they put online will be publicly available, this development opens up a new twist — use. It’s not just about others being able to see what you write online, but also about how that data will be used.

Bard, ChatGPT, Bing Chat, and other AI models that provide real-time information work by scraping information from the internet. The sourced information can often come from others’ intellectual property. Right now, there are lawsuits accusing these AI tools of theft, and there are likely to be more to come down the line.

The Horizon we missed has returned

Whenever Google introduces some new phones, like it did with last year's Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, we expect a certain amount of stuff that's going to be at least momentarily exclusive to this latest generation, like with Photo Unblur. Pixel phones don't only get tools like that, though, and also include exclusive wallpapers

like the Feathers collection or the Live Bloom wallpapers. After sitting out a couple recent releases, Google is now bringing back one live wallpaper that might just ring a bell.

Going back to the first generation, Pixel phones offered a live wallpaper called Horizon, showing a mountainous skyline that would respond with the sun rising as your battery charged, and setting during discharge. If you like live wallpapers, you may fondly remember it from older models, but with last year's release of the Pixel 6a, Horizon was not present in the Living Universe section of Pixel wallpapers

Google seemed to have killed it off.

Horizon didn't come back with the release of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, but now, 9to5Google has spotted it appearing in the Living Universe collection. We can confirm it is available to all Pixel 7 and 7 Pro owners running the latest Android 13 stable build, and Android 14 Beta 3.1 as well.

The Horizon live wallpaper makes for a nice throwback, especially if you're in the know. Even otherwise, it's nice to see a nostalgic live wallpaper come back to modern devices untouched. This one could be a great option if you don't enjoy seeing the battery percentage in the status bar, but still want quick, glanceable information about your remaining charge. Hopefully, Horizon will make its way to the Pixel 8 series, too, later this year.

You don't have to wait for the Pixel 8 to get a look at its own wallpapers, since those are already available for download. They feature static images of various mineral crystals in the same colors as the hardware. They sure look interesting, and are worth checking out in both light and dark variations if this Horizon nostalgia doesn't quite appeal to you.

Over the past few updates to Android Auto, Google has been quietly building out new features tied to EVs. This includes the ability to manually identify your car as an electric vehicle and toggle on EV features within Google Maps on Android Auto. This all appears within Android Auto’s built-in settings menu under a new section titled “EV Settings.”

This should be one of the thinnest foldable phones ever as per a new teaser image showing some outlines and parts of what could be one of the best competitors to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Google Pixel Fold.

It seems like the rejuvenated S21 FE is squarely aimed at OnePlus.

  • More apparent details about the relaunched Galaxy S21 FE have appeared online.
  • The phone is expected to be re-released in India with a Snapdragon chip.
  • The leak also points to a recommended price tag in the market.

~~Is this being worked on/looked at? I ask since the post mentioned discussion was happening with the .id admins but I haven't seen any answers about whether that's a priority (it seems Lemdro.id is the one that needs to federate with k.bin).~~

~~Just kinda bummed since I use kbin the vast majority of this time.~~

Edit: ah cool, quick turnarounds are sexy. Thanks @cole@lemdro.id!

Anyone else check it out? They want access to everything. And there is no website, only an app. Yikes.

With Android 12, Pixels gained the ability to share links from the Recents menu — now it's time for Asus devices to join the fun
