Heh, in theory on our end it wouldn't be... That different? I don't expect the licensing for the BSD variants would have changed the outcomes all that much, the BSD licenses are more libre than the GPL even. The bigger issue might be support fragmentation among the different flavours (distros?) of BSD, unless one BSD version came out on top.
It'd be a weird world without Linux, but still having the Unix wars happen. I guess it's possible System V would still play a bigger role in that timeline too.
Nice, that's cool! Yeah, I've heard that, among those that know, the BSD's are actually quite well loved for server usage. Still a much, much smaller userbase than Linux servers, but it definitely has a small but loving group for it. Doas
is interesting too, I've heard of that for Linux too, but haven't experimented with it. But I know some that do quite like it.
Course in an only slightly different timeline, BSD Unix would probably fulfill the role that Linux does today too!
Lol, nice! I forgot old DOS backs in those days didn't have multitasking available. Though, given DOS was always sub-par compared to *nix systems, that doesn't surprise me either.
Out of curiosity, why did you choose esrly-day Linux over one of the BSD's? I don't recall if FreeBSD (or the any if the other common derivatives) existed yet, but I know that BSD proper was already a thing by then.
I won't say I approve, but that choice is up to the instances to decide. I'm hardly a fan of Meta and don't use their services, so it ultimately impacts me very little, if at all. Just don't tend to be a fan of pre-emptive judgment on such things.
Heh, you've been using Linux about as long as I've been alive... xD
Running OG Slackware is pretty cool though! That's one that you don't hear a lot nowadays, but definitely has some giants that built off of it. Given the length of time you've been using Linux for, ever try out Yggdrasill Linux from back in the day?
Nice! NixOS is quite fascinating I must say. I don't have a huge use for it per se, but I can see huge potential if I ever wanted to make a custom distro to ship out. The Nix config file thing would be super handy!
I must say, I do have to agree that care must be taken with defederating. While I certainly understand doing so from instances which are highly toxic, or those that are actively engaging in spamming. Banning very large instances, like SIJW, could start to cause a lot of issues as more communities move over from Reddit. Here's a list I found on Reddit of some communities that have established themselves (I don't know of it's in an official manner or not, but not sure it 100% matters in this case) on Lemmy apparently. Many are on lemmy.ml, but others are on different instances too, such as lemmy.world. That's definitely going to be a problem soon if we defederated from omw of those.
I support defederating from actively troublesome instances, but only in a reactive way. Proactively defederating could lead to more issues than it solves. Unless we actively had issues from SIJW, I don't see a reason to defederate from them? (It would help of we could just block certain communities from instances, instead of having to defederate entirely)
Honestly, and this will definitely be a bit abstract sounding, I miss my machine not getting in my way. On Mac, it's the small things that bug me... You can't use Delete to trash highlighted files, you can't use the arrow keys to cycle through viewed images in a folder, etc. The way MacOS handles software installtions bugs me too, it feels like it's rather difficult to ever fully delete software you've installed on the machine, at least using Disk Images from 3rd parties. On Windows, it feels like the OS is designed to get in your way, in particular when trying to tweak anything in the Settings it just becomes an absolute nightmare to deal with. MacOS at least does settings.... Better, I guess? Linux is hardly perfect here either, and really deep settings will need the terminal, but they are there for you if you want them.
You're not kidding about the boot-up times. When I had a Windows partition on my main Linux PC, it was shocking to me just how much slower W10 was to boot-up vs Pop!_OS. And like... I use LUKS encryption which does make that process a bit slower, and it was still markedly faster than Windows booting up.
Here's hoping Izzy (F-Droid alternative repo) picks it up fast (edit: just realized that might break things, wait to update until pawbs.social does)... However, good FYI for anyone that doesn't know, you can download Jerboa directly from the developers GitHub page as well, since it's FOSS.
