Looks like somebody is in need of a bit of democracy, eh?

What I find interesting is it seems like we are again converging on the same service as cable. Which suggests that the best method of profiting off watching movies/tv at home is to have ad supported entertainment, with a monthly fee.

Once again, the profit motive ruins something good .

I think it's better to think of it like this:

How do you make your money? Do you need to make a wage? Or can you let your property (land, buildings, stocks, etc.) be your income?

The real amount doesn't matter, it's whether you have to work to live or not.

If you have to work, you are the working class. If you don't, you are the owner/capitalist class. But your analysis is still somewhat correct: millionaires and small business owners are closer to the working class than billionaires, it does still matter how they make it though.

Exactly. It's how you make your money, not how much you make.

In my view this should hopefully signal to US "allies" to further move away from dependence on the US, leading to a further crumbling of the hegemony.

I was buying something at a small shop and for some reason the shop owner decided to talk about how much the government ruins business through taxes, how the government shouldn't be in business, and how there is too much socialism in government. Maybe I look like a libertarian lol.

I did my best to ask him what he meant to try and get him thinking and it seemed to help a bit. I even pulled a "any socialist I've talked to doesn't believe in any of that".

I seem to have a lot of these conversations, even when I'm minding my own business. Have any of you had luck with breaking down preconceived notions others may have? I'd just like to be better prepared since apparently this is just something that happens to me.

And to be honest, if you are already a socialist you are more likely to read and organize. So videos aren't necessarily meant for you at that point .

Though I admit as a country bumpkin it would be nice to find something like a how-to list of somewhat fleshed out ideas for organizing in your community. Like a third-thought channel or something lol. It's pretty hard to start from scratch. And yea there are no socialist/commie groups here so joining isn't an option and starting one goes back to my previous point.

I mean, he knows loads about manipulating people and being rich. Does he bring value to society?

No.

No one should have veto power, it makes any organization extremely undemocratic. And given the American arsenal, it's already difficult to be democratic.

Look, how can we be tolerant if we don't tolerate intolerance

Though to be fair, DPRK is the way it is at least in part thanks to the Americans obliterating their cities and farm land. But we can ignore history to make a "I used to be in a communist country and it's bad, trust me bro" statement.

And I agree, I prefer to live in a system where prisoners aren't primarily minorities or political prisoners. And where the prison system isn't the most populated in the world, and rife with for-profit forced labour.

I would also be curious to hear which definition of "capitalism" and "Communism" you are using. That is, if you are open to dialogue.

[-] rando895@lemmy.ml 24 points 8 months ago

Because capitalism was the first time money existed lol

[-] rando895@lemmy.ml 24 points 8 months ago

That would require reading Marx lol. These hot takes usually come from reactionaries mimicking what they hear from other reactionaries/charlatans/media towing the stateline. Marx was wrong about some things of course, like the revolutions to a democratically worker owned economy would come from the industrialized centres. But knowing about the ideas which are critical of our current economic system is dangerous to a few, and freeing to the majority.
