Oh you use compact mode? You will love the 1.5 update just arrived on Play Store. About the repeating posts issue unfortunately it's reddit side problem [1] [2] the other issue where you play a video and the audio keeps playing could most probably be a buffering or memory issue(I haven't encountered one on Android yet) but if you do encounter it next time please screen record and send me if you can.

I was asked to post here. cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/18458440

Since a lot of you asked me to build an Android version and post about it here when I launch, and I sincerely apologise that I forgot to post on lemmy sooner. The free app was launched on Play store almost a month ago and has garnered some excellent reviews. It has feature parity with the iPhone App and works on all Android 8.0+ devices.

You can download the app here.

Any feedback is wholeheartedly welcome, you can also post issues and contribute to the rdx web app on Github.

I am happy to answer them.

Why post on lemmy when you can post it on Reddit? Increased visibility?

Because a lot of contributors and users when the web app launched a year ago were from Lemmy only. A lot of lemmy users use rdx on iOS or web app to lurk on the niche subs that haven't made it to lemmy yet. Also when I launched the iOS version so many of the users here asked me to let them know when I launch an Android version. I have linked one such thread in the first line of my post.

Why use this instead of RedReader?

  1. RedReader afaik was only available only Android while rdx is available everywhere(it's a pwa too).
  2. Better Media viewing, although not as accessible as RedReader I made it initially to mimic some Apollo features like fast subreddit switching etc.
  3. Read-Only so focuses on lurking on Reddit only, no way to login. Some people consider this a feature as this saves them time.

Posting the update here because most of the users of RDX come from Lemmy community only.

Why?

A lot of users asked for a more polished viewer with more features and users in the EU now can not add web apps to home screen, so I spent some time building an iOS app. You can also save images and videos/gifs from Reddit now. It's stil completely free (with an optional donate option available), the web app also works.

You can download the app here

My reddit web viewer still works! Story: When reddit killed 3rd party apps, I uploaded a web viewer I have been using for myself to Github pages for everyone to use...

If you want to lurk on Reddit, you can use this web reader I built for myself when I got inspired by the Apollo app years ago

Some people have asked about an Android app so maybe I will try to ship it by the end of this month. Thing is, I see thousands of users using the website but feedback/contributions etc are so small I don't even know what people want. I mean I am not expecting 5 star reviews/donations from every user using it but people don't even give good/bad feedback. I also don't want to force tracking because that's what I myself despise. So there is not way to know what people want unless they use the feedback form and tell me.

Double tap any comment? Guess I should leave this as a tip for new users because a lot of people ask me this.

Apple is removing PWA(progressive web apps) from EU Which means:

  1. Your subscribed subs will be removed if you don't use the app in the last 7 days - https://stackoverflow.com/a/76792560
  2. Your saved posts will be removed in the same way, and all other settings if you don't consistently use the website.
  3. You won't get the options I have added like a fixed header for standalone version.

So any PWA website that you currently use won't be able to store anything in your localstorage for more than 7 days after you visiting that website.

Reason: Apple confirms: It's killing home screen web apps in the EU

Image

  1. Compact mode (smaller thumbnails, faster loading) is here,
  2. Infinite Scrolling is here. If that's your thing enable it from the settings page.
  3. All GIFs now load faster than ever.
  4. OP's comments are labelled.
  5. New themes and fonts. (not just the default dark and white, go colorful)

I wanted to see how many people are using this, the analytics are anonymous. I will switch it to a better privacy friendly analytics service soon.

Any reason I should use this over something like Stealth?

From my quick google search I can see that Stealth is an Android App ( i can't seem to find an iOS version) while rdx is a website you can fire up in any browser. if apps are your thing Stealth is certainly better. Anyway, Stealth and RDX both are open source and free. You can use whatever you like.

If it's popular enough maybe. For now it's averaging 17-18k visits monthly so not even a drop in the ocean. But yeah i can't post the direct link to rdx on Reddit. I have to post Github link.

I am posting the updates here because most of the users of RDX came from this community only.

Multiple updates have been made to https://rdx.overdevs.com since I last posted here including:

  1. Importing subscriptions from Reddit
  2. Saving posts for later
  3. Share button
  4. hls/dash videos
  5. better search

Indirectly? yes. But there are some subs like r/progresspics r/gainit etc that haven't moved to other platforms and have good content on them related to the niche the serve. Also the occasional google search that takes you to reddit.

Hey.... and if anyone is interested in a chrome extension to automatically redirect reddit links to this please tell me, I have made one and I am using it for myself for now, if people want it I will upload it to the extension store.

I posted about that here and forgot < https://lemmy.world/post/896361> but today when I checked cloudflare analytics it showed about 1000 pageviews in last 24 hours. Looks like some people are using it so just wanted to let you guys know that it works, no ads. no popups nothing.

You can't login or anything but it's good for viewing posts and media and you can switch subreddits easily by clicking on the page title in the center like Apollo. Also it's on Github.
