Yes that's definitely a concern to keep in mind.

The problem is that if someone doesn't use a password manager they're morenlikely to reuse weak ones.

Using a password manager is a better path, as long as there is awareness on how to keep it secured.

yeah what kind of crap is this.

What a sweet thing to do for a loved one.

For sure, I agree and it's bad. But frankly unsurprising. This is the trajectory of the internet: greater control.

We've become too dependent on centralized tech companies and erred in allowing tech companies to change, define, and control the internet in the first place.

Alternatives must be promoted in mass scale.

that's how it goes. we're in this transformation but most people don't notice it because they experience the world and things seem to be ok (for now, or they are distracted by some other insignificant thing), and this is not even mentioning the economic and political obstacles that block any meaningful change.

I think the likely scenario is people won't seriously start to be concerned (and by serious i mean taking proactive steps across their individual and social lives) until this situation further develops and it will be a bit too late. I hope i'm wrong.

You're right, why are we allowing the internet be be monopolized like this? it is futile because we're basically giving up all control and forming a dependence on these few select tech companies.

suburbs are essentially sprawled urban areas that are predicated on bad design and requiring a car.

Suburbs are design with the implicit assumption that people will need a car. No car and require public transit? Tough shit, good luck with whatever current routes may or may not exist.

For Desktops. Nice. I'd like to see numbers that include servers, steam decks, androids, etc..

Give it more time. As Microsoft cuts support for perfectly good working hardware, people will learn about this magical free and open source software operating system of many varieties they can choose from, and with a little nudge and a beginner friendly variant (linux mint, ubuntu), they too will learn to love linux.

I much rather use mastodon. It's so much better, despite the volume, but low volume is nice at times. Feels manageable. Being able to stick to local instances but also link to others is great. All around better model compared to centralized stuff.

Also it frees up my time to do other things.
