I don't mind politics. Just wish I, who's never set foot in the US, could come in here waste my time as usual and not have US News & Politics make its way into my feed every time through some non-US News & Politics community.

Maybe I need to make more use of a skill most USians lack, knowledge of other languages, and find myself more non-US stuff. Not exactly easy, but would pay off easily.

There's some great stuff in English, but I wouldn't miss it much if it means no more US news & politics. There ought to be good shit in other languages. I just need to find the good stuff, and where it be

Idk about singing or dancing, but I have been listening to some artists whose songs I can't understand, such as MODELKI, Nina Chuba, and Annalisa, to name a few

Just helped someone yesterday, though they had Windows 11 already. They ended up with Pop!_OS, probably inspired by me having Pop!_OS (I did not make decisions here, only helped). Now we need to work out why Pop!_OS acting like the laptop can't do Wi-Fi

I've seen some like this in Kebab spots. 10/10 love me some Kebab

Honestly, I'd miss plenty of content, and some of it great, too. But I can't take opening this damn app anymore and being blasted with US everywhere, even in unrelated communities. I honestly feel sometimes like I should just quit Lemmy, or at least take a long break. But idk what to do in the bathroom lol

What are some things to know / keep in mind when helping someone install Linux?

Installing for myself, I have to deal with my choices (like my recent "update without the recommended backup hoping my files are there when I get back", Pop!_OS 24.04 COSMIC). But for others, I'dn't like risking them facing my consequences.

Any tips are welcome!

Edit: for context, I was asked for help on that. I am not converting someone just outta nowhere.

And my worry is less with everyday usage. They can adapt, or, assuming dual boot, boot back to Windows. But we prolly need to choose a distro, and not brick their laptop. Two important parts!

Also, we in CS, so… make of that what you will

It is said streaming, especially video, takes plenty electricity, can be bad for the environment. So I wonder, how does watching Kim Possible on Mickey Channel compare to watching it on Mickey Plus? Similarly, and maybe even better of a comparison, how does listening to something like 623.7 FWGR Radio on FM compare to listening to the station's online stream?

Not sure if this counts as a shower thought, but as someone who is not on social media, I am oftentimes clueless as to why trending pages are trending on Wikipedia, and can only hope information on the page helps add context. Would be nice having context easily available for popular pages.

Edit: now I'm not sure if Trending Pages are a thing on Wikipedia or if this is an extra functionality offered by WikiReader, the Wikipedia app I use

Not really necessarily about buying, so I don't know if this post fits here. But seems like a good place for the "discussion."

Let us compile a list of European content creators / artists.

I find that the US may have a rather large influence online, via music and content, and art. Yet I feel like Europe also has great stuff that could be getting more attention. So, what are some good European musicians, YouTube channels, podcasts, etc.? No matter the language.

Maybe do indicate the language, to help people filter through what they can understand. And maybe the country as well, or not. A short description and/or category is also nice, for people to know ahead of time if it is something they're interested in.

Dunno if a "similar to" would be a good adition, as in "for people who like" or "an alternative to"

This could also be made into some sort of Awesome list on Git. Feels like that'd be cool. Or at least a list people could search and filter through. If anyone would like to take this idea and make it a thing, feel free!

For instance:

Long Story Short – Podcast – News – English A short daily European news podcast

As per title, if you had to switch away from Spotify ASAP, what streaming service would you go with? Ideally something around the same price range, meaning the change won't incur in extra expenses. Also good if the service does its job well: playing music and paying artists. Any feature parity with Spotify is a bonus, except podcasts, which don't require a paid streaming service. Or audiobooks. Focus on music. No piracy either (it's illegal). The more money going to artists, the better.

Edit: extra bonus points if it is not 'Murican! Also, piracy is very illegal!!!

Taking sexual relationship as its own thing, separate from romantic relationship (i.e. separating the sexual and romantic aspects), what is the difference between a friendship and a romantic relationship? What differentiates them, exactly?

There's an ever-growing amount of music available today, a few taps (or clicks) away. I for one feel like there's a lot of great music in many genres and styles, coming from many countries, and in many languages. And there's always new, interesting stuff coming out regularly.

Whether a new release from an artist you like, or an old one you want to go back to, there are so many options to choose from at any given point in time. Yet we can only hear one at a time, so we must choose. So…

How do you choose what to listen to, and how do you keep up with everything you want to keep up with? Do you manage to listen to everything you want to on a regular basis? Do you instead choose to articially limit yourself to keep sane? Or is your music taste narrow enough this is of no worry?

As per title, I am curious. How does your mind / your thoughts work? I only ever experienced my own thoughts, so I'm curious how it works for other people.

I for one feel like my thoughts sometimes are like me talking to myself silently. Sometimes I can even let out a random short sound, which I've come to start disguising by laughing kinda quietly or coughing or whatever. Like it was part of something, and not like an inner monologue almost leaking out.

So, how do your thoughts work?

Pardon me if these questionings are offensive in any way. That is not my intention. I am merely curious on the intricacies of the N-word and its uses.

It is commonly known, I think, that white people oughn't say it, something which doesn't extend to Black people. I wonder, though, if white people think of the word, in their head (assuming the person has some sort of inmer monologue). I would imagine thinking the word might increase one's propensity to utter the word aloud. Or perhaps not. Certainly further exposure to content that features said language must increase one's likelihood of using the term, no? Even if one never makes use of it aloud, surely the chances hypotetically increase, no?

Race is a social construct anyways, so what exactly are races? What defines a race? Is it from a 'Murican perspective? Asian is a race, innit? Is Latin American a race? If so, do white Latin Americans, or those with European descent, is that part of such race? How does the usage of the N-word apply to other races, assuming such thing?

Edit: I imagine race doesn't just boil down to skin colour, right? There's more to it than white = light skinned and Black = dark skinned, innit?

Edit 2: Maybe this was better for NoStupidQuestions. I may have mistankenly gone too soon for Ask Lemmy, seeing it is a question.

I'd like to add I am not questioning the N-word itself. I would not say it. I comprehend it is offensive. Seeing as it gets used by Black people, and it's not to be used by white people, I was merely wondering on how this goes exactly. Whether it boils down to Black vs. non-Black, and what exactly defines being Black. (And also the part about thinking the word)

To add, I am not 'Murican, so no need to assume that. English isn't even me first language.

Edit 3: to be very clear, I DO NOT WISH TO USE THE N-WORD. And I am not looking for some sort of loophole. I am merely trying to better understand things. I apologise if this is of any offense to Black people, as it is not my intention to harm anyone

Edit 4: mods, if needed be, you can safely delete this post. Not that you needed permission. I'd just like to let known if this is any problem, deletion is fine by me. I don't intent on causing issues
