Unfortunately, I'm having to use X11 because of work (context). Thanks for the help!

Just after seeing this in the shop.

I've been seeing a lot of talk about CachyOS recently. Has anyone here tried it? It seems interesting and I might give it a go (currently on EndeavourOS) on a spare drive in my PC.

I often hear folks in the Linux community discussing their preference for Arch (and Linux in general) because they can install only the packages they want or need - no bloat.

I've come across users with a couple of hundred packages installed (likely fresh installs), but I've also seen others with thousands.

Personally, I'm currently at 1.7k packages on my desktop and 1.3k on my laptop (both running EndeavourOS). There might be a few packages I could remove, but I don't feel like my system is bloated.

I guess it's subjective, but when do you consider a system to be bloated?

I'm asking as a relatively new Linux user - been daily driving for about 7/8 months

I was in the ED the other day and noticed that they use a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 10. My question is two part.

  1. Do you know of hospitals using Linux?
  2. Besides legacy software and unwanted downtime, is there any reason why they wouldn’t use Linux?

Music for filmmakers (self.asklemmy)
submitted 3 months ago by governorkeagan to c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml

There doesn’t seem to be a very active filmmaking community on Lemmy, so I thought I’d ask here.

I’ve been using Artlist.io for almost a year now but I’ve started being less and less impressed with the music. A lot of it feels the same or leans too much into the corporate genre.

I’m looking for recommendations before I renew my subscription. Audiio seems like it could be a good deal? Musicbed also seems great but a little more expensive than I’d like at the moment.

Any other recommendations that I should look at?

Just want to add this comparison between Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. Google Maps is definitely better in some areas and OSM is better in others.

Unmapped USA - Mastodon Bot (self.openstreetmap)
submitted 3 months ago by governorkeagan to c/openstreetmap@lemmy.ml

I thought I’d share this Mastodon bot - @SmallTownUSA - here as I’ve found it great fun.

Posting towns in the USA with a population less than 1000 that are undermapped on OpenStreetMap.org

I quite enjoy mapping areas that have nothing or very little mapped. This bot kind of helps with that. Although, I’d love another one for my home country and current country of residence.

Mastodon link in case someone doesn’t want to use X.

Funny story. My partner was making mince meat a little while back and instead of adding nutmeg they accidentally added cinnamon. Actually turned out really good!

Smallest I know of is Lyle, Minnesota (population of 573). The only reason I know that is because I added all of the buildings there to OpenStreetMap - before and after photo on Mastodon.

I’ve been refreshing the arch repo site constantly to check if it’s available on the standard repo (not the testing).

I love this community because of responses like this.

I can’t wait for these changes to go live on TILvids.com

Thank you for all the hard work!!

[-] governorkeagan 26 points 7 months ago

It was frightening to watch that happen live. So many people were unable to get home after work because of the rioting. There were claims that they did it for the woman and children, but I fail to see how they helped anyone but themselves.

You mean freedom minutes, right??

[-] governorkeagan 25 points 8 months ago

It’s interesting that it’s not as widespread amongst the public. As far as I know, the rest of the world either uses it or is able to understand it whereas I’ve had the opposite with Americans. I’m a very limited sample size though.
