I do think Sterdenn could benefit from a "traditional mode", maybe as an unlockable. The normal game is certainly fun, but having a handful of set levels that are static that players can really learn and fine-tune, witb leaderboards, would be pretty great. The current Daily Run kinda has that idea where everyone plays the same run with the same drops, but you only play it once. I'd love to see persistent levels that let you develop routing techniques, etc.

Bummer about the IREM collections. I'll look into them and see if the issues are worth passing on them. There are definitely a few games in there I would love to have, particularly Mr. Heli.

Also: I don't think CYGNI is on Switch, at least not in North America. I've never come across it.

Is it too early to hope it gets English localization? I played it a bit on PSX and struggled with it, but it looks really fun. Love the idea of it being a playable Tokusatsu.

I am really looking forward to seeing what Iuchi has in store for us!

Yeah, I haven't heard much good about any of the Saturn Tribute games. I guess they all have horrible input lag and are generally a mess, which sucks because I kinda want Assault Suit Leynos 2.

I have Sterdenn, and thoroughly enjoy it for what it is. I think it qualifies as a shmup, and I'm curious why you disqualify it?

If the IREM Collections are bad... that sucks. I've got all three on my wishlist. I'll have to look into the consensus on those.

Is Akai Satan's Shin a victim to the same input lag as the rest of the Psikyo games?

Thanks for the response!

The last corridor before the final boss is kicking my ass.

I am currently playing the crap out of Toaplan Arcade Collection Vol 2. Working toward a 1CC on Vimana. Nearly there!

Batrider needs an M2 Shottriggers port. Maybe as part of a Raizing collection, but I'd be happy with just Batrider.

I've seen a lot of "best of" lists, and they almost all come down to a three-way brawl between DDP DOJ, Mushi, and Crimson Clover.

What I'm curious about is the list of games to avoid. I've already run into one or two.

I accidentally bought Red Raptor thinking it was Red Death because I wanted all of the Project Starship games. Red Raptor is... not good. At least not so far in the half hour I put into it. It feels like somebody made a euroshmup by hearing one poorly described and from screenshots, but without playing or watching one in motion. Also, Q-Yo Blaster. I got it after reading AzorMX's "Greatest Switch Shmups" article on it. Sounded like fun, but... I can't recommend it at all. It looks like an old Flash game, in the worst way. Like it's built with old, low-res Clipart taped onto somebody's freshman Computer Science project.

So, having that experience, what other games do you strongly recommend avoiding?

Updated the original post with the list.

I was considering that one, too. Baroque was such a weird game. I never got too far in it, but I was also weirdly obsessed with it for a bit.

A lot, I'll post the list when I'm off work. Pretty great selection, though.

Howdy. I hope things pick up around here. I'd like to stay off Reddit, but there's not a lot of other places to talk about niche games these days!

Hope to find some new folks to discuss some great games!

I've been taking heavy advantage of the Switch e-shop summer sale to grab a ton of stuff for pennies on the dollar.

Edit: Since someone asked, list of all of the stuff I grabbed in the sale. Andro Dunos 2, Hazelnut Hex, Dimension Drive, Drains, Jet Lancer, Graze Counter GM, Under Defeat, GunVein, Ikaruga, DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou, Radiant Silvergun, R°Type Delta HD Boosted, R°Type Dimensions EX, Red Raptor, Red Death, Project Starship, Project Starship X, Risk System, Sherlock Holmes and the Devil's Daughter, Eschatos, Waifu Uncovered, ZPF, Overdriven Evolution, Grood, Sophstar, Q-Yo Blaster, Freedom Finger, Devil Engine Complete Edition, Shinorubi, Blazing Chrome, Remote Life, Terra Flame, Star Gagnant, Null Drifter, Toaplan Arcade Collection Vol 1, Toaplan Arcade Collection Vol 2.

Everything but DDP SDOJ and Devil Engine were at least 50% off, most under $5.

The movie doesn't have to explicitly be about dragons, but dragons need to be featured as more than just a passing comment or minor cameo or scene.

I love the Eborsisk in Willow. It's a very unique two-headed fire breathing dragon that is somehow both incredibly ugly and very cute, and Willow is one of my favorite films.

Rathalos from Monster Hunter and King Ghidorah from Godzilla are also very cool dragons.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the changes to SMTV in Vengeance?

I'm digging them. Save anywhere and Magatsu Rails are excellent improvements, and I dig the new demons quite a bit. Playing on Switch.

I just started watching Voyager on Paramount Plus today, and noticed that the first two episodes, which are shown together, are presented as the appropriate 4:3 aspect ratio, but Episode 3 "Parallax" is presented in a distorted 16:9 or 16:10 format. I see no option to change this in Paramount Plus settings, and my Vizio TV will also not allow me to alter what ratio is being displayed.

Anyone else have this issue? Is this going to persist for the entire series? I didn't have this issue at all with TOS, Animated, TNG, or DS9.
