I still remember this guy from Florida in the show of Bill Maher, telling him that global warming was fake, that he could see from his house in Florida that the sea level wasn't rising. I remember him holding Bill by the arm telling him "trust me, it's all fake". Dunno if he was a governor or somethin'. If someone remember the episode, please post it.
What this clown did not understand is that the problem is not the sea level reaching your house, it's the risk seen by the insurance company. Any climatic event added to a higher sea level and boom, your house is flooded, even if 3 days later the event is gone and the sea isn't in your house anymore. It will happen every year, become a systemic risk and you won't be insured anymore. Even if your house is dry 350 days a year and only wet 15 days a year. Even if the sea level is below your house.
It has some similarities to Brexit. During Brexit a lot of british people living in Spain believed that they would not be affected by Brexit and that they would be able to keep living in Spain. Until they received a letter from the government telling them they had to leave.
It's all virtual until the administrative machine start to walk over you. In their case it's a letter from the insurance. It's gonna happen everywhere.

We have a bigger problem and it's popularity. Some instances will want to become as big as possible, for resell value.
So they will be encouraged to let the maximum of people registering a new account, including bots and spammers. Because they make the numbers and they start the snowball effect.
Didn't you all looked a the most populated instances/magazine when you registered magz, and you didn't care about the mags with zero activity? Well, you are encouraging the process in a way.
People will be reluctant to defederate or to ban popular magazines from other subs. So the float of spammers is unlikely to stop, because the person who makes the decision, the admin of the instance, will welcome them. And you won't ban the instance or the mag.
We have to become more like a club.

8, 9 and 10 years: you dislike change, you are incredibly broke or you only have a smartphone in the first place because it’s basically necessary to function in modern society. Plus you get to be smug about being green.
Your whole thing is about money. If you think that all this technology, energy, CO2, minerals come for free then you are in for a very bad surprise.
You are paying the price as we speak, through the inflation of all the other products you pay for every day. You will pay all your life for your privilege of falling for an ad campaign. Less crops, lower quality of crops? -> You will pay good money because of it. Less irrigation water? Same effect. Insurance companies in general will increase their premium non-stop because the risks will be everywhere. All this money comes out of your pocket.
A phone is not a necessity to function in a modern society, and green people are not smug. You talk as if you were out of the game, as if you were not impacted. Are you from the northern hemisphere? Don't you feel the heat these days?
With such a mass of users, all those people now only have one thing in common: they are consumers. That's the only point of the platform, grouping these people and feeding them ads.
The comments are merely a distraction between two ads.
This is why there is a good reason for keeping a little barrier of entry to the fediverse: this barrier is also a barrier to advertisers.
