He threw it out of the hole, which makes some sense to me. I'd assume these also have a time fuse or remote detonator, and probably do something similar.
Didn’t seem to match the description, but maybe I missed something.
I think, he is kicking the explosive with predictable outcome.
Unless the bomb only triggers on impact, but the impact failed to do so?
and then him throwing/kicking it did it instead? Honestly my first thought was to agree with you - assumed those can detonate on time or remote as well, and it was going to pop either way.
