Just let Genndy Tartakovsky make his animated Popeye movie already you cowards

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

It's it a gritty reboot where they murder olive while Popeye is out buying spinach and injecting it straight into his jugular because he collapsed the veins in his nutsack from overuse? Let's say Bluto pulls him out of the gutter cleans him up and takes him to an actual gym to get ripped only to then go on a John wick-esk rampage murdering basically everyone they run into like John wick. "Is that a bad guy?" "I dunno, kill em all and let God keep the change!" As Popeye guns down people in a shopping center who happen to be in suits in the wrong area.

Maybe that creepy hamburger fuck can do it because she never bought him a goddamn hamburger so he grills her ass and eats her while muttering that Tuesday finally came.

AI should be amazing for snubbed animators like him, because soon enough, he can just do it himself.

I'm sure if there's one thing animators are excited about, it's the possibility of having AI generate the animation for them.

Did he draw every frame of his other works?

People act like text is the only input. Nah: these are denoisers. They fill in gaps. Current models aren't tuned specifically to finish sketches or tween animatics, but that's right there waiting to happen.

I wanna know what Sora does if you drop in unfinished parts of The Thief & The Cobbler. It's not gonna spit out some completely different cartoon.

If you never watched Popeye it's worth seeing at least once. It has a ton of heart. It's no where near coming close to amazing or anything, but it gets a worse reputation that it deserves

It uses the comic strip for it's world, which is different than what people are used to from only seeing the cartoon stuff. Every character is basically perfectly cast, and they all have their own unique things they do, is pretty interesting just to watch all the background characters interact.

It's Robin Williams first movie, too. Seeing him as a scrubby mumbling ahole is fun. Although the mumbling did get tiring after awhile.

Didn’t know it was Robin Williams first movie. I haven’t seen it for decades. You make me want to watch it again!

Edit: I do remember Shelly Duvall as Olive Oyl, though. You’re right about the casting!

[–] MonsiuerPatEBrown@reddthat.com 5 points 8 months ago

This would work if it starred Olivia Coleman.

As Popeye.

Aw, I love this movie. We watched it a ton of times when I was a kid. Sweet Pea is just damn adorable, and it’s perfectly cast.

They're trying to ride the coattails of the Katzenjammer Kids blockbuster movie.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 months ago

As in, made by the folks working at the last Blockbuster?

They've got plenty of free time.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 months ago

I haven't seen the first adaptation, but the casting seems unbelievably apt. If Shelly Duvall couldn't make Olive Oyl work opposite a living cartoon like Robin Williams - give up.

It's "renew your copyright" time again...

I'm surprised he's still a smoker.
