Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a thought. Occasionally, I stumble upon one of the flying island with a small pool teeming with a handful of fish or spot a group of ostriches roaming.

Now, I fully understand that this is merely a video game, and that these non-playable characters will respawn after the first blood moon as the game resets its content... However, I can't help but feel a twinge of hesitation when contemplating the idea of stripping the land bare, removing the fish, plants, and trees for a quick boost or, more likely, yet another ancient arowana for my sack (I've lost count at this point!).

Does anyone else experience this bittersweet melancholy when immersed in virtual worlds? do you take everything, or just what you need?

I used to play games immersively like that, but developers insist on making sure none of it matters. Like the blood moon, I understand why it's a thing, but I'd love to be able to turn it off, and stop all events from resetting and all entities from respawning. People are going to disagree with me, and that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but I'd just like the option.

Like in BotW, there was a mod to stop Ancient Guardians from respawning, at that point, I wanted to take them all down. It felt like my actions actually had an impact on the world. (One of the reasons why I hate that there is no post-game after the Ganon fights.)

yea, i get that.

I played, and enjoyed Raft immensely, but it felt off playing a game about how humanity destroyed the world, while going island to island clear cutting them.

(Minor correction: just like it has been in BotW, Blood Moons in TotK respawn only enemies and weapons/bows/shields in the overworld. Other actors, like regular animals, mushrooms, fruit on trees etc. respawn by a different gameplay mechanic based on RNG and real time)

....that being said, I totally get what you mean. I love playing these games as immersive as possible even to the point of making sure Link gets regular sleep and a hot meal each day regardless of whether or not he's missing health, and being careful with natural resources is part of that. I do mine every ore deposit I come across, but I don't take wild bird eggs out of nests (I buy them in Hateno instead) and often leave rare critters alone unless I need them for armor upgrades. Especially the fish on these Islands trigger this response, as they're rare, in a tiny and likely very fragile ecosystem, and might be the only food source for the "Sky Seagulls", so just taking them all away would mess up the food chain up there pretty badly. The same goes for apples - I have zero problems taking a lot of the apples in Hateno Village or other places where there are already plenty, but usually only take 1-2 from the apple trees on the sky islands. Everything else just feels wrong somehow.

Fair enough. I assumed it all shared the same respawn source, even if they wouldn't respawn in lore for the same reason!

I was this same why when in orchards or forests. I would only take what I needed and care not just to mow the forest down for ten acorns.
