If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

From the article:

“He was and remains a testament to the virtues of resilience and self-reinvention,” the petition reads. “It was not Flaco’s fault that someone cut a hole in his enclosure. Drawn to the sights and sounds of the city he had only imagined for the first 13 years of his life, he ventured out and learned why he had wings. We will all miss him (we do not speak for the rats, who surely will tell terrifying tales of his fearsome talons to future generations).”

The petition asks the New York City Council to commission a pedestal with a branch protruding and a life size Flaco statue perched upon it, located near the tree across from the compost in the northwest quadrant of the park where he roosted most often.

This would be really nice. ❤️

I loved reading about Flaco this past year. There were so many great pictures of an owl in the big city. 🦉 🌃

I'd definitely go visit it.

As long as it isn't some bizarre interpretation of an owl...

I'm going to Pittsburgh this weekend (owl related business!) and there is a Mr Rogers statue, but it's this scary lumpy thing that has a recording of children's disembodied voices playing on loop! 😧

I'll put this terrifying golum under a spoiler tag so people aren't forced to look at it in this thread about a beautiful owl...

His college can get a nice statue with the puppets and the Land of Make Believe, but the city gets the other one.

Now that's a tribute!

I will always miss you Flaco! I wish I knew you were there last time I was in Central Park.

I loved seeing his wild yet stoic owl figure in contrast with the city lights in the photos.
