A recent patent application is suggesting that Google is going to replace the notch with an under-display front-facing camera in future Pixel phones.

Notch? I have the pixel 6 and its barely a small circle, don't even notice it because it fits perfectly in the upper bar.

A notch I would consider those ungastly iphone notches which take over 15% of your upper screen space.

Why? I've yet to see one that doesn't look like shit.

There are some Chinese devices where the camera is pretty much invisible. It doesn't look like Samsung's version where you can clearly see the pixels.

That being said, they absolutely destroy camera quality - so either Google is betting on AI to fake face details, or they assume people will use the back cameras more often.

either Google is betting on AI

Pretty much this:

The output from each sensor is then combined to create a final high-quality image using digital image processing and machine learning. In this way, the negative impact of shooting through a screen is reduced.

Googles software on photos is usually the best. Still rather have a hole punch than a shitty camera tho

Can we have it under display and not look like shit?

Not really with whats available for consumer grade tech rn

New features are going to get weird and pointless as smartphone sales continue to drop.

OnePlus 7 had a Camera that popped out the top. I'd have that. I rarely if ever use front camera. Most gir apps that need facial recognition

Problem with that is it's a movable part, and with movable parts it's prone to break. Unless they can make that super durable... I liked it when it came out. I was tempted to buy it.

True everything must eventually break but as I said. I barely use it. There if I need it.

I used mine for three years, and gave it to a friend who is still using it. It works flawlessly. They really should have kept it. I LOVED it from a privacy perspective.

Well, or seems like quality of selfies on Pixels will keep going down.

My 2XL is still unmatched to this day.

Pixel 3 was probably peek selfie, but I haven't owned one of those

Images from the Samsung ones still look bad, not sure why we'd want this for like 1% more screen
