Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.

This is not debate club. Unless it’s amusing debate.

You can't have your vegetables if you don't eat your meth!

Yes, because healthy companies hold kids hoatage

google successfully persuading every usamerican (idk how is in other countries) educational institution that nothing would possibly go wrong if they just slid their useful little software in between teachers and students that everyone could use on their neat little chromebooks was such a fucking catastrophe

@theodoraward @GhostOnTheHalfShell I’ve been repeating this all over Mastodon but it is absurdly, tragically easy to get a school district or educational institution to buy whatever snake-oil tech solution you’re selling, partly because the buyers don’t know enough to ask the right questions.

the way in was the IT department. chromebooks are interchangeable and semidisposable, which solved many problems for them. even then the vendors had to build special education versions that would survive the litttle dears throwing them down a stairwell.

Sounds like massive win-win to me.

Ah yes, because Google believes themselves to be the only search engine in existence...No way that it could possibly spur schools to ditch them instead. For something less shitty like a meta-search engine that isn't interested in collecting your information. Ah, monopolies, this is why you need to swat them like flies and quickly too!

Are schools blocking AI? One can hope.

Public grade schools should go back to pencil and paper, and block student access to the internet entirely at school. Kids were fine with this since before 20 years ago, why is it considered drastic now? They could learn about the internet at school, but not use it there.

Can they use typewriters please? I've broken my hand enough that writing much longer than a couple minutes hurts. Typing doesn't hurt like that.

I can definitively agree on the grade school aspect. Internet shouldnt be a priority learning there, but more fundamental stuff about tech - such as basic notion of an OS and files/directories.

... Are you guys talking about the kids game where you sit in a circle and chase each other around? Why's the "ose" getting cut off the end?

[–] swlabr@awful.systems 6 points 2 days ago

Round these parts we’re so familiar with the game that we elide the sibilance. But we say the rest of it out of reverence for the game

They’re better off.
