Google and Republicans want stupid easy-to-control kids who grow up into stupid easy-to-control adults that can't think for themselves.

[–] njordomir@lemmy.world 8 points 4 hours ago

I'm gonna forward this article to DuckDuckGo and Kagi. I imagine they could help the school district do what Google can't.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 1 points 3 hours ago

Okay. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Google.

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 3 points 3 hours ago

Make it so anyone can turn it off 🙏

This will backfire hard. It will create students who do not conflate Google with search.

Never interrupt your enemy when he is in the middle of making a big mistake.

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

They seem to be going all-in on bad ideas lately, losing all that ad revenue from ai giving the answers before they can bombard the inquirer with ad slop and now this. Let them die a fiery death, lol

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 62 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Great! Let's teach kids that "searching the internet" does not have to mean "Google it"

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 11 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I've read that young folks have dropped the term and now say "search it". I'll have to ask my young ones. Unfortunately, they often answer in ways they think daddy wants to hear, despite my admonitions to stop that shit.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

No they fucking say "chatgpt it" 💀

DuckDuckGo

You are foolish for not using that by now.

[–] Tiger@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

Happy Kagi user here

[–] sirimeow@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I prefer Qwant. Better results, especially when searching in other languages than English.

searxng if youre into self hosting

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 12 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

And yes, DDG is Bing results, we know.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 hours ago

It's a mix of indexes, Bing has been a minority share for years now.

[–] nerdo@lemmy.zip -1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Except the results suck, and the results are the entire purpose

[–] original_charles@lemmy.world 0 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Maybe "naïve" or "ill informed". "Foolish" is pretty harsh.

[–] EntheoNaut@lemmy.ml 7 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Foolish is accurate.

Anyone supporting Google, Meta, Musk, Anthropic, Amazon, etc are fools.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

The assumption of tech savvy around here is wild! Never been in another online space where people assume everyone is at a reasonable tech level.

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

You've never been on the internet before lemmy?

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

:) Since the 90s! But nowhere, and I do mean nowhere, is as snotty and assumptive about the man-on-the-street's tech savvy.

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Yeah I'd agree its probably over assumed here more than other places, but it's definitely not uncommon in other online spaces... I find it hard to believe it's something you've never seen before unless the only other space you've been is Instagram or tumblr and only following food posts or similar...

FTFY:

The assumption of tech savvy around here is wild! Never been in another online space where [all the] people [there] assume everyone is at a reasonable tech level.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

You get me. I meant it's worse here than other places. Same for assuming political savvy. Believe it or not, there are shitloads of Americans who don't know about 1/1000th of Trump' crimes. "Oh I don't listen, politics is all bullshit."

Commented on Trump's dementia to a friend the other day, "Yeah, but wasn't Biden pretty bad too?" That's where the "man on the street" is at. :(

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 1 points 22 minutes ago* (last edited 22 minutes ago)

The 'you' in the comment from the top of this thread is addressing the average lemmy user, the man on the street being a fool is nearly a given 😅

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 21 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Good, keep shooting your self.
Schools all across the world are rejecting AI, this will open the road for alternative search engines.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Another commenter said that the IT admin would simply change the search engine behind the omnibar. Easy money and nothing really changes except the kids betting better search results.

[–] Slovene85@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 hours ago

Kids shouldn't gamble.

[–] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 21 points 8 hours ago

Don't be Evil...be nice to those quarterly reports.

[–] assaultpotato@sh.itjust.works 18 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Search should be a public utility at this point.

But then again I don't know how you'd neutrally maintain a search algorithm.

Regardless, depending on a private company for something so fundamental to societal functions seems bad.

[–] milbyte11@lemmy.ml 7 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

the way it worked originally, pagerank. SEO, will never cease sadly; goodhart's law n all, but it's better than what we have now

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

You want the government running search?! That's an absolute horror show; you see the impossibility of neutrality.

Here in Florida, "homosexual teen" would lead to sites about conversion camps. We might just score a Democrat in the governor's mansion today, so that would change. And then change again. Imagine the non-stop public fight over what is and is not appropriate to show in a search. AH! (I'm actually having a giggle thinking about such fighting. "Trannie" would lead to results about transmissions one year, a transexual slur the next, banned altogether the next.)

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

At least there would be a non-stop public fight over it, instead of just having to swallow whatever the corpos which captured the government want to put in their search result.

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I imagine there'd be even more bribery if search was run by a government.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 2 points 5 hours ago

If search was provided by a government run by a functioning country with strong democratic roots - AKA the west excluding the US - political parties messing with search would cause them to lose voters. Bribery only increases that effect in an actually working structure.

[–] beejjorgensen@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 7 hours ago

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 10 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

google: ai summaries are hurting our advertisement revenue

also google: we'll block you if you reject our ai

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

As someone else pointed out, the IT admin will just change the search engine behind the omnibar. Speaking as a sysadmin, I wouldn't put up with a broken search bar, I'd simply fix it. Hell, even consumers have the power to change it in Chrome!

[–] AliOski@feddit.nl 8 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

DuckDuckGo and Startpage are the way

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

Had to switch to DDG on my phone. I rarely browse the internet that way, but when I was sitting in my flea market booth the ads were fucking unbearable.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

sounds like a great opportunity to drop google from education infrastructure and rely on a more balanced approach of books, papers, and physically handing shit in.

dunno. worked for me when I was in school.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

To me the title reads as, "Allow us to abuse you or we wont let you be abused by us".

In other words the best solution is to reject both anyway, Fuck ai.
