With every passing day it looks more and more like he's just an undercover Valve agent doing absolutely everything in his power to push as many people as possible away from Steam's competitors...

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I claim Tim Sweeny is a little bitch. See how easy that is.

[–] DerEnder@lemmus.org 4 points 1 hour ago

Let us point at him and laugh, again!

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 10 points 2 hours ago

Sweeny is the Trump of gaming

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 4 points 1 hour ago

Oh alright, I'll install steam again and buy a few games.

See what happens Weeney? That's what you get for being such a whiney little lying bitch.

[–] Pholous@piefed.social 21 points 4 hours ago

Well, Steam was the reason I had no qualms swapping Windows for Linux. After that I discovered Indie games in the Applications Manager and grew a renewed interest in finding little gems of games, new and old. I can even play games with friends who still use Windows without problems. So for me, Steam enriched gaming. Oh yeah, last week I deleted my Epic Games account with I don't know how many games I acquired for free over the years, because quality beats quantity. There may have been some good games in there, but I don't want to drag a scrapyard with me just because somewhere in there may be a nice snack. Also I would have to install an AI-slop app to start it. That's a nah for me. Goodbye Tim.

[–] atrielienz@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago

You gotta raise the rents Tim. You gotta stop letting Valve live rent free in your head. At this point you're just giving them free press and good free press at that.

Also, Fuck you, Tim.

[–] RandomHugs@lemmy.world 17 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

The funniest thing about the recent Epic nonsense is that Steam will most likely choose to not validate this by making any statements, and still gain from this without lifting a finger.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 hour ago

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 30 points 6 hours ago

Stop giving this sad twat any attention.

You know after PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds moved from being an Arma mod to a standalone game using the Unreal engine... Their developers at Unreal worked closely with PUBG to modify the engine during the Battle Royale craze a few years ago. Epic took those engine changes that PUBG was basically funding and this led to creating Fortnite. Now that Epic had a copycat battle royale game, they needed a game store, and created the Epic Games Store to compete with Steam. The goal was to have a distribution channel for other games built on the Unreal engine. The new Epic Games Store cut for developers was 12% instead of 30% from Steam. But there was a hidden cost in that the engine itself required a license fee, somewhere between 5 and 10% of the revenue. So really, he is just mad that after all these years, Steam is still in the lead and the Epic Games Store would charge close to 30% (if it could)...

I'm looking forward to how the industry changes when (or optimistically?, if) all those AI investments go down the drain. I'm assuming neither Valve nor Nintendo fell into the AI craze while almost everyone else did (I have no source other than vibes though, can't name any Sony AI stuff actually), but how much will they stay ahead?

Mind you, monopoly and a potential economic crisis isn't good. Everything will get worse. I just think it'll be entertaining if this is how Sweeney is acting already.

[–] nightlily@leminal.space 0 points 2 hours ago

I don’t particularly like Valve/Steam and their monopoly built with support from child gambling but this is sore loser posting from Sweeney et al.

There are plenty of abstraction libraries that make Steamworks just one of several backends.

[–] BigTrout75@lemmy.world 12 points 8 hours ago

Huh, and all this time I thought it was Microsoft and EA buying gaming studios and driving then into the ground. Crazy

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 40 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

This has been an absolutely wonderful crashout so far, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Sweeney really seems to loose it in recent weeks. The principal Skinner meme comes to mind.

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 9 points 8 hours ago

Weeks? Years you mean.
Ever since fortnite became a cash machine he's been on such a high horse he lost his sense of reality..

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 150 points 13 hours ago (6 children)

The client is basically irrelevant in this day and age. Anyone could build one better than Steam and it wouldn't even be hard.

Lol. So do it Timmy.

[–] RustySharp@programming.dev 5 points 3 hours ago

and it wouldn't even be hard.

Then who said this, Timmy? The LLM you used to do your press releases?

Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher

[–] MoogleMaestro@lemmy.zip 58 points 11 hours ago

AnYONe COUld Do iT

[–] vividspecter@aussie.zone 104 points 13 hours ago

From the people that took two years to implement a shopping cart. The same people that are so incompetent they had to resort to vibe coding their Linux client.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 29 points 11 hours ago

Wow is this an actual quote? This guy is hella toxic.

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 34 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

His company released the very best client AI tokens could buy. (Its not great.)

[–] Redjard@reddthat.com 3 points 3 hours ago

It started faster than steams new rt3 client for -1 days.

"Valve has held gaming back for years by locking developers' PC games into Steamworks' social walled garden where players can't talk to other players on iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or even other PC stores."

my guy lemmy, matrix, reddit, discord, forums and even your local library game night exists. You simply cannot be such a simpleton.

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 14 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

That and what he said is untrue as hell. Steam games can communicate with other platforms. Sf6, sf5, baldurs gate, divinity original sins, pso2, killer instinct, ... And the list goes on and on

[–] SpaghettiMaster@feddit.uk 2 points 3 hours ago

Valve don't even care if your game has PC and console players playing together.

[–] ChaosSpectre@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 hours ago

Its starting to feel like Tim is in an AI echo chamber and disconnected from reality

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 10 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

he should go into comedy, hes quite funny.

[–] atrielienz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Not in a funny ha ha way.

[–] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 7 points 8 hours ago

Held it up you mean.

You on the other hand HAVE been holding back gaming.

George of the Jungle still slaps three decades later.

The client is basically irrelevant in this day and age. Anyone could build one better than Steam and it wouldn't even be hard. I only bring it up because it's what everyone talks about when defending Steam. Like it's still 2024 and these things are hard. Steam's only remaining value is its network.

No sir. Trust. Steam has earned trust from their customers. THAT is what the 30% cut pays for. Trust that we wont get scammed. Trust that it "just works". Trust that the service provider keeps our interests in mind when making decisions, not just the shareholders. Trust that Valve is in it for the long haul and our library purchases won't just poof on us. That doesn't mean there isn't risk, but there is trust. I can't say the same for Epic.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago

Moron says something stupid, more news at 11

[–] Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip 22 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

This is coming from the guy whose distribution platform outright lacks the ability to reuse existing game files after an OS reinstall. EGS requirES that the user initiate each game download one at a time and do some weird file juggling to try to trick the launcher into using what is already there.

You know, basic functionality that literally every other launcher is able to handle by pointing to a games’s installed folder. In Steam’s case, you can reload libraryfolders.vdf and it’ll automstically detect and link up files appropriately all at once across multiple drives.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 32 points 12 hours ago

It's true. They've held it back from the enshittification that Timmy so desperately wants.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 50 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

Jesus, is Sweeney undergoing some form of AI psychosis? Or is he just generally unhinged?

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 24 points 12 hours ago

Just narcissistic personality disorder smashing itself face first into reality.

Valve has a good reputation amongst gamers and Epic has a bad reputation amongst gamers. Why is that, Tim?

[–] agentTeiko@piefed.social 1 points 51 minutes ago

Private companies vs public company one you are the customer the other one the shareholders/market are the customer you are the product

[–] ObtuseDoorFrame@lemmy.zip 16 points 11 hours ago

Holy fuck. Who cares? This idiot said something stupid? Again? No fucking way.

How is this an article? Why does PC Gamer think every single thing this idiot tweets needs an "article" written about it?

[–] d3lta19@lemmy.ca 34 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

This guy is such a loser. I will never spend a dime in the epic store

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 17 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Don't play their free games, either. Your time counts as money.
