Rules

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Behind a wire fence lies a vast gaping wound of earth. Before Google’s arrival a few months ago, an estimated quarter of a million trees occupied the 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest near the town of Muhos in rural northern Finland. Now they are all gone.

After the tech company illegally stripped the entire area to build a datacentre – taking even the top soil with it – all that remains is a vast expanse of mud indented with the trail marks of machinery, puddles and mounds of earth, roots and branches. Residents say that brown water flowing off the site is going into a stream that feeds the Oulujoki River.

The correct response to this would be prison time for Google execs. China kills greedy execs.

And a 1m/tree fine (400b in total) :3

I oppose the death penalty, but holy hell is it good that they hold the people at the top personally accountable for crimes.

This isn't something that just happens overnight. The local government and law enforcement also needs to be held accountable for failing to stop this.

just happens overnight.

It kind of did actually, they went forward without license awaiting the results of an environmental damage assessment report. Aslo Finland is quite sparsely populated ( ~18/ km2)

The local government and law enforcement also needs to be held accountable

Yeah 100%, seems that the Finnish ( and the European) law & mindset is not ready for this sort of BS . The Finnish Gvement actually endorsed this Google investment without even thinking of the consequences. Sort of like money is always good for our country bla la. But in this case it's actually not true, unless you really tax them/make them pay.

This story is like a warning for others what could happen one day - or maybe already has happened - in your own backyard.

No it did not "kind of happen overnight".

Any finnish article that talks about the timeline.

Afaik they asked for permissions in March, the permission was pending and they already were felling trees.

Few months later they are like "oh there is this building law that can give us permissions"

They also file that and get permission for "preliminary construction proceedings" or something like that, while the permission from the first place that is trying to calculate the environmental impact is still pending, they halt the site in october.

So about 6 months it was going and someone should have stopped it if permissions were not cleared.

To see something ilke this makes me furios.

In times of climate change, they just don't give a fuck. Think about all the wildlife that is killed or cast out by this.

You can't leave Google fast enough, that's for sure.

Fucking evil company.

Just cancel the building permits.

They already proved they won't follow even basic requirements.

[–] mrcleanup@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Not just fines please. I'm a big fan of "you have to put it back the way it was before we can let anything else proceed with the project" as well

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That includes the 50+ years of growth needed to get it back to the "way it was". Of course.

[–] mrcleanup@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Oh, definitely.

And jail time for executives, board members, and majority shareholders.

I’m a big fan of community service. Making them wake up at 5am for the next 30 years to plant trees sounds great.

[–] unglueclass23@programming.dev 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In addition to the 250,000 trees felled at Muhos, Annala estimates that an additional 150,000 trees were felled at Otanmäki. Because the trees have been felled illegally, she says wood from the two sites cannot be sold to wood-processing plan

400k trees in total. Inconceivable number.

Someone in another reply said they should be fined 1m/tree...

400b seems fair :3

[–] BitUnWise@programming.dev 5 points 1 day ago

Seize the land and 'fine' them by having them pay to replant the forest

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

If it was in fact illegal, when is rebuilding the forest scheduled to start?

[–] Freeposity@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

I bet Petteri Orpo ends up with a job at Google for a very large salary once he's thrown out of office.

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That's heartbreaking. When do we set those motherfuckers on fire?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So what, just catch the responsible person there? Then you can figure out who actually gave the commands, while the construction progress is halted. It's a illegal building site anyway, you'll do nothing wrong by just going ahead.

What can we do as citizens? Somebody an idea? E.g. reach out to the authorities in finnland an eu

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 1 points 1 day ago

Wear sandals. Fight like a dead man.
