Tools that probably no one had heard of but are extremely helpful for Degoogling:

Sustysubs.net - A list of alternative services

  • A very useful tool that you can find privacy-friendly altermatives to proprietary services. You can suggest a service via Codeberg and/or Email

Link:

Wizestream - A better NewPipe

  • A NewPipe fork that intergrates Material Design 3 into the UI and includes things like ReturnYouTubeDislike, SponsorBlock, Dearrow, Learning tools, Invidious, subcription syncronization,

Repository:

IzzyOnDroid:

LibreCuts - The only FOSS Android video editor for the professionals

  • A video editor for Android that supports overlays and keyframes, which in my opinion, is the minimum requirment for a video editor to be "professional"

Repository:

F-Droid:

LibreFind - Community-driven app for finding alternative apps for Android

  • LibreFind is probably the most well-known project listed here, but basically, you submit a FOSS alternative to a proprietary app, then wait for it to be approved. It also lists how many of your local apps are FOSS or not

Repository:

F-Droid:

IzzyOnDroid:

(TURNS OUT IT IS NOT OPEN-SOURCE MY BAD) Pur.ili - Kagi if it was free

  • Pur.ili is a private search engine that does not have big tech spy on you by secret. Unlike most "privacy friendly" search engines, like DuckDuckGo or Brave Search, this one has a completely independent index, meaning no contracts to big tech to let them spy on you by secret. The difference between this and Kagi? It doesn't require a paid subscription, so you can use it for free

Wow I didn't expect my post to reach 100 upvotes and the 3rd spot in the top of this community. This is literally JUST my FIRST post. Wow

[–] Patrickuos@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Disclosure: I work on one of these, so flag it as such. Adding uOS since the thread is about de-Google options: an all-in-one that runs in the browser (nothing to install), covering chat, calendar, files, docs, spreadsheets and calls under one account, end-to-end encrypted and hosted in Europe. Free for individuals. Not a FOSS Android app like most of the list, more a replacement for the Google Workspace layer, and it's alpha by invitation rather than install-and-go today. Putting it here so people weighing a full de-Google have it on the radar.

Sorry if this isn't organized. This is my first post on Lemmy

[–] SarcasticBrownnose@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

You can edit the post and title as you see fit, it's not like other platforms.

[–] OppositeMeaning@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Ok, I reorganized it

[–] OppositeMeaning@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I figured. I know

[–] fdagpigj@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

It would be a lot more readable if each link would be just one bullet point that starts with the title and then the link, on the same line.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago

Another good option is to used headlines (lines starting with ##) rather than numbered points. :)

[–] jaygray91@piefed.zip 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I need to look into wizestream. Sounds interesting.

I've been happy with another newpipe fork, pipepipe, for a long time. Back then they were called animepipe because it included the bullet comments flying across the video like niconicodouga (nnd). No, I will not explain why it's desirable by some anime otaku. But it also includes support for peertube, bilibili and of course nnd.

Also good to see librefind for android. Degoogling is a journey, and finding apps are hard enough outside of the biggest ones. Librefind helps quite a bit. And can be contributed with finds by others.

Glad I helped you with something

[–] qualia@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (13 children)

Has anyone been able to find a Google Maps alternative that's good with public transit routes? That's my last google holdout.

[–] TobuscusLover2001@lemmy.zip 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

For android: Vela Maps, basically newpipe but for google maps. It anonymises your requests to google maps and functions essentially the same way. It also works offline assuming you downloaded the maps you need (including search results).

[–] yuki_gassen@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

Last I tried I found it unstable, also too much AI coding for me to feel happy about it. Sticking with CoMaps for now personally.

[–] lntl@lemmy.ml 8 points 4 days ago

I use Transit app for public transport

[–] bloubz@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 days ago

Comaps is enough for me when I only need the routes itenary and don't care for the time tables. Comaps is, according to many people, the best open-source (and not company-owned) map at the moment

[–] needanke@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What country are you in? In my experience transit apps are somewhat localized.

[–] qualia@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Nice try but this is all about information security. Jaykay: California, United States.

[–] radio4392@catodon.rocks 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Magic Earth, Here WeGo, Nunav

[–] radio4392@catodon.rocks 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@spacelord@sh.itjust.works What don’t you like about the suggestion?

[–] spacelord@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I don't like that you can see my downvote!?? Where's this coming from?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago
[–] dadarobot@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not Foss but magic earth is pretty nice

[–] eco_game@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah Magic Earth isn't as good as Google Maps, but it comes closest to the full package.

Just FYI regarding car navigation, so far it's been pretty hit or miss for me whether it knows if roads are closed.

[–] radio4392@catodon.rocks 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I also like using Nunav in Germany. It provides much better coverage of traffic jams and road closures.

[–] eco_game@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 days ago

I haven't heard of them before, that definitely looks interesting. I'll have to do some more research into them before I trust them fully but thanks.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It seems Murena Maps is coming along nicely in that respect! It has buses and trains, shows live traffic info, is open source, and seems to be working alright.

It's still under development, so it's not perfect, but for public transportation it seems to be pretty great. You need to install Obtanium to try it. The repo is here.

[–] radio4392@catodon.rocks 1 points 3 days ago

As far as I know, the app doesn’t support traffic information

[–] fancy_pants@reddthat.com 2 points 4 days ago

Not foss but busnavi is quite privacy respecting. But you haven't stated what country you live in.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I need the traffic warnings, if I had that and the speed limits I could jump ship

[–] fdagpigj@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

In some places, local transit companies have their own route planning apps that are very good.

[–] whoami@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Have you tried mapy.com?

[–] OppositeMeaning@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Maybe this? https://f-droid.org/packages/net.youapps.transport/ If not, check if sustysubs.net has a transport app available. From what I remember, it didn't include this category, tho

Is it? It works for me and doesn't have the stretching problems on my thinner-than-average viewport, of the newpipe forks.

[–] OppositeMeaning@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It literally hasn't got an updatenfor SEVEN MONTHS. How does it still work for you!?!?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It loads videos fine? Guess Yt didn't change the API much.

[–] OppositeMeaning@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What are other underrated projects that you have found?

[–] wingnut@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

https://opengrind.org/ - grindr front end that strips out subscriptions. You cant create an account through the app yet tho.

[–] OppositeMeaning@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I don't use Grindr. Idk ANYTHING about Grindr, not even about its existence. But maybe this will help others. Who knows?
