I took my daughter to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton after work. Because she’s a teenager and deserves her privacy, I don’t want to share too much about why, but I will say, with her permission, that it was a mental health concern. I was worried about her safety.

...

I had decided to go at that time because it was a weekday evening. Not too early, and not too late. I figured it would be better than going on the weekend, and still I expected to wait five hours, maybe even seven.

Why would you go to the emergency room for this? This is not an emergent situation. If it were, you wouldn't have waited for days to take your child there.

This is why she was always at the bottom of the triage list. That is how triage lists work; the patient with the least urgent need goes to the bottom of the list, regardless of how long they have been waiting.

Our healthcare system pushes people to do this and I don't blame them for it. I assume you have a doctor but for people who don't, the emergency is often the only care readily available. It's not productive to attack each other while the conservatives destroy any and all options for healthcare we have

In Canada? I thought you all had better than we do down here in the States.

Regardless, you're still going to be triaged and have to wait if your situation isn't urgent and other patients are waiting.

We do, the article sounds like a stressed parent, but obviously the triage saw it wasn't an immediate crisis. I had a child in true crisis, they brought her in immediately with no wait.

People and media like to bandwagon healthcare, and don't understand it is triage not personal hospital care.

Same when I had Cancer, I was brought in right away for surgery, MRI, CT, PETS, and fitting of the plastic fixture that holds you steady for radiation. They needed 2 weeks total (including the above) to plan the radiation paths, and coordinate with chemo hospital stays. 7 weeks later I was out of the system (and cancer free) just checkups regularly.

"Better" doesn't mean that there aren't issues.

Conservatives in Canada want to turn public heatlhcare into private. They will make millions.

Good lord. 17 hours is brutal.

Have medical conditions that require ED visits.

Been in one more than most.

13 hours is typical.

23 hours before being seen is my current maximum.

Canadian medical care is not much longer in wait times than American medical care.

seems a little worst, i was in public funded hospital(aka govt funded), they took people immediately, based on the severity of the ER visit. one time i had loss of smell , which slowly came back they took me in immediately. cant say much for rural hospitals though, or hospitals serving a large part of a red state.

rural hospitals vary from day to day because you are dealing with such large numbers as one doctor or 5 beds.

Health savings or health cuts?
