As a person who recently switched to using Unreal for a project... Oh god Tim Sweeney please just give me another year before you start pulling shit like this goddamn

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

Ha! I was using unity when they lost their shit. HAHAHA How does it feel?? Lmao I kid. But no, yeah, that sucks :/ πŸ«‚ I would say hopefully epic pulls their head out of their ass, but not only has it been up there from the start, but it seems like people and companies that taste AI get hooked in because it's like easily accessible ragebait catered just for you. You feel like you're getting stuff done, but when the dust settles, you realize everybody knows youre an asshole but you and you accomplished nothing but shitting in your own mouth and trying to convince everybody else to have a taste.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

Hmmm. Should probably uninstall epic store.

Epic AI Disney Shooter.

It's like the four horsemen of the acrapolipse.

[–] ApeNo1@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I think it’s spelled acroprolapse.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 95 points 2 days ago (21 children)

lol holy fuck, this is going to be amazingly entertaining to watch crash and burn

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I'm not convinced they'll crash and burn. Fortnite still prints money. Limited-time skins and the continued existence of children still works. Plus, fortnite has hundreds of "games" within it at this point just from Epic, plus all kinds of user-created modes. It's pubg, it's roblox, it's Lego, it's hot wheels. Honestly more shocked that it sounds like this Disney venture is making separate titles and not just more fortnite modes.

No more ehand written code is literally like saying "we pledge never to innovate, and will only ever remake what has been made before"

[–] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That fully tracks for Disney which, long before the GenAI bubble was a glimmer in grifters' eyes, had already settled into being the place creativity went to die while old shit continues to be rehashed and resold to consumers ad nauseam by corporate drones.

Once upon a time I worked for a company that provided DSL internet.

One day we got a call from a customer complaining that they had no connection.

We investigated and discovered that their line had been completely cancelled from under us and ask the customer what happened to their telephone line.

They said they had set up VoIP on their internet connection, and thus no longer had need of their telephone line and so they cancelled it.

The telephone line on which we had provisioned their DSL internet...

"No more hand-written code" sounds to me an awful lot like "we don't need that telephone line any more".

The real shame here is that the fall-out won't be as sudden and the people who ought to be getting the brunt of it will manage to squirm out of any responsibility.

The real shame here is that the fall-out won’t be as sudden and the people who ought to be getting the brunt of it will manage to squirm out of any responsibility.

Thank you for the wise way of putting this, because I was getting excited with the whole "too subtle and sudden approach of justice to escape it" opposite emotion-driven interpretation, where dangerous fools always escape justice with some scratches, leaving others to suffer, but this time they will get complacent. Like with debt or with antivaxxer ideas.

Some projects are banning AI code

And then there's Tim, banning human code

[–] kalman@dboft.com 29 points 2 days ago (2 children)

AI is a democratizing technology (is this a thing?) while concentrating control. We’re lured into dependence, and someone else holds the keys. RAM prices show us how they can revoke access..

[–] SoupBrick@pawb.social 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

Don't worry, the bubble pop will make it much harder for companies to afford doing this.

Current estimate, based off the financial side of the AI industry, is mid 2027 or earlier.

Look up Ed Zitron if you are interested in following the current situation.

[–] kalman@dboft.com 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yeh, I watch his stuff. IMO, it won't be a pop where there is a concentric splatter of damage hitting everyone. Those that are propping this whole thing up have so much wealth that they can keep circulating it back into the market and decide when they want it to go. So, when this goes, IMO, it will be more like an intentional harvesting of organs with entities ready to take for their own use. I think this is just part of the plan .. another part being Anthony Snyder calling out superpower suicide... there are interconnections with all of this.

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Most of the wealth is share prices though, so when there's a market crash, they won't have as much anymore...

Also the banks lending the money for the data center build outs will have some big defaulting loans similar to the 2008 financial crisis(although i think the peak debt is possibly still a lot less than 2008?), but with even less real estate value as security, since they're mostly built on lower value land...

[–] belochka@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Yes, it's going to hurt the small fish the most, the big fish the least, and also all kinds of VC and individual investors, in short, grease of the economy that could benefit a lot of things instead of getting burnt. Not even talking about those investors suffering. Kicking the ladder is the real "flaw of capitalism" and not what people who want to rob those they don't like think.

[–] spacelord@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Tech Report is Ed's channel?

[–] kiku@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No. He's just a common guest. He has a substack where he talks about this stuff.

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 3 points 2 days ago
[–] SoupBrick@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

Not sure. At very least, he is featured on it a lot.

At the same time AI-transitioning companies are not those under whom the control is being centralized, all those managers don't seem to understand this. If demand for developers and their negotiating position against employers is eroding due to this technology, then so is that of those employers against their customers.

Meaning, of course, that there will be changes in demand for tech workers in the world even after the bubble burst. I'm mentally prepared to try myself in trades. Woodworking is nice. All the dangers of losing your fingers or getting git in the head with something heavy, accompanying construction jobs, are sad, while construction is cool.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why do companies have to adopt the worst version of every policy towards AI?

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

They don't. It's just that only the worst ones make the news.

Although there have also been a bunch of "project bans all AI contributions" stories as well.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Tim Sweeney is a fucking moron.

[–] geekwithsoul@piefed.social 9 points 2 days ago

A general rule of thumb to be a sane, rational, empathetic, and well-adjusted person is to take the opposite view point of Tim Sweeney at every opportunity.

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 days ago

The jank when they finally push this turd out the door is going to be, well, Epic.

[–] DrSleepless@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Personally looking forward to playing as Mickey Mouse with 13 fingers

[–] addie@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

Latest version of Unreal engine plus a fully slop game on top? Reckon you might get 13 fps to go with those 13 fingers.

[–] Kowowow@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Man I know bethesda has some serious jank but I wonder how bad it would be if they tried this and got ai to do it for them

Very poorly timed announcement.
