Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Here's what makes this whole thing absurd

The ban in question was a 3-day ban from r/youll_be_banned which is a subreddit where getting banned is literally part of its punchline. You make a post, you get banned if the mods are in a bad mood, and that's just the joke

Why on earth would I try to circumvent such a short ban, from that subreddit of all subreddits?

Still, it doesn't change that I've been accused by the automated system, even for something that I did not do

Right after I got that message about the sitewide ban, I panicked and sent a half-baked appeal explaining that I had zero intent. Of course that appeal got rejected because I didn't explain the context above. You could tell from the wording itself that I was still experiencing the shock of it all

And, well there is a page allowing me to send my second appeal. I'm just scared of it getting rejected again somehow

I think in the meantime, I'm just gonna stop shouting into the void and reach out here to you guys, just to talk it over. It's been 11 days since the ban, and I've been a little depressed about it

Does anyone want to share their experiences?

Edit: Submitted my second appeal which says:

My 3-day ban was from r/youll_be_banned, where bans are part of the joke. I didn’t intentionally evade it. Please review the specific activity behind my permanent suspension; my first appeal lacked context.

Wish me luck, even if my luck is low. If they still don't hear it, oh well I guess

Been perma banned three times for challenging right wing views- been using Lemmy for a year now and haven’t looked back. I do miss the vast archive of data that formed Reddit but now that AI models are stealing all its data, I don’t see a bright future for it other than a gathering of bot accounts spreading nefarious agendas

[–] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

They report spam anything that challenges their views. It's a broken windows type of strategy. Content mods will see a bunch of reports accumulated against you and assume you must be a problematic account.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

i avoided politics sub, because i was catching too many of my accounts getting "banned" before i went on lemmy.

Of course that appeal got rejected because I didn’t explain the context above.

The repeal was rejected because they're never not rejected.

I posted info on effective ban evasion https://lemmy.world/post/52856407 , so far so good. IP address is by far the highest hurdle to clear these days, because of the crackdown on spammers. The universal weak spot with IPs is cell phones. It's too complicated to lock phone numbers to IPs since cell phones constantly move around, but I'm sure they would love to do this and might some day find a way to make it happen. But until that happens, it's the only back door, outside of paying good money for clean domestic IPs in your own timezone.

Reddit is fighting ban evaders with the same fire they used to go after bot networks, and probably losing a lot of valid, well meaning users in the process.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

they recently tried to force logins because too many people were lurking afraid of getting banned, plus OPENAI stopped using the site too. new device, new browser is the easiest way to go back on reddit.

they are getting good at blocking the spammers(the one drives traffic to thier own online businesses, or sometimes of accounts). i dont think it actually stops them though, im on another forum where they talk about this very thing, they can produce enough accounts ,devices, thier own browser setup to evade it constantly, or eventually. i dont think they go after propaganda bots though.

[–] Xmd5a@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I tried anti finger printing, which is like the same as using the device, and that works fine. I think what was the setting me back was not using a clean IP, and not using a mainstream email provider.

I found out that if you use the cell phone IP with anti-fingerprinting like the brave browser, and he's a fresh email account through Gmail or Hotmail, youre pretty much in the clear from the get-go.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i waited a whole year and was gauging reddits bans, they leveled off like last year, because they realize they were banning too much people, which would generated content for ai scraping. i dont use mobile for reddit anymore, except for lurking. i use librewolf as the desktop browser, since its a new browser i never used with reddit.

its harder if you are spammer for your "business/income" they catch on faster that way. even these people started to produce "organic human behaviour, which serves reddits purpose, to not illicit the filtering. i stay away from all the large subs though, as long you are not a serial evader, you have to wait quite awhile before making a new account.

[–] Xmd5a@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe they will start profiling cell service IPs, but so far I've been in the clear with them. I think spam / proxy IP database lookups is weighing heavily in reddit's profiling. Using Claude I cam up with a reasonably seamless way to have Firefox and Brave on my home PC use my phone's data connection instead of my cable IP, which is very very static and long blacklisted.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

reddit is definitely doing that, for people who are spamming thier own businesses. i created an account after a year of getting shadowbanned, from brave, i think what set it off during early last year, when i was using brave, reddint dint notice, but when i switched to a different browser they immediately shadowbanned the now deleted account. as long as you have different IP/device, and browser you are in the clear. the spammers i was talking about have multiple devices(phones) so they can do the spamming. i only use the phone to lurk now and on desktop i avoid any of the problematic subs.

[–] Xmd5a@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

They probably can't profile cell IPs because the collateral damage would be too great.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

So they really just think I'm as bad as a bot network, Jesus Christ no wonder they went full Shoretrooper from Andor on me

With all that you've pointed out, I just really don't want to go there... at least not yet

My goal is to at least try everything that I can first, to appeal it every once in a while if I can. I can't prove their suspicions by being exactly what I'm trying to make my case about not being

[–] Xmd5a@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I'm only on reddit for three or four subreddits. I was banned from two of them for moderate political views. Not surprisingly, my new account has not been banned by the subreddits I like, but other subreddits have banned my account using something I just learned existed called "/u/bot-bouncer" which is apparently a non-reddit service that somehow decides if a new account is a bot or not based on account age and post history analysis alone. Absolutely crazy. This of course increases the ban evasion threat considerably.

That's shitty. I know everyone here hates reddit but it still sucks losing something you've spent a lot of time enjoying. A lot of people here deal with that by being angry at reddit. That's OK too.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I don't even feel angry. Just straight up sad

Like, I feel as if I've just lost everything that made the internet fun. My niche interests just feel so lonely now, my connection to a huge pool of advisors just... gone

Dude that sucks. I'm sorry. This place is growing but it's definitely not there yet. Losing that access to knowledge really sucks.

[–] Kyrias@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's a shit site full of bots. Who cares?

Find a better alternative and move on.

[–] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Besides Lemmy, what alternatives do people recommend?

[–] Kyrias@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just browse Wikipedia when you're bored. Find some trusted newssites and visit them/subscribe to their feeds.

You lived before Reddit you can do it again if Lemmy isn't for you.

[–] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I used RSS before Reddit

[–] Rod_Orm@piefed.world 1 points 1 week ago

topicle.com

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Get off Reddit dude, only bots and Nazis left anyway

[–] EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Reddit fuckin' sucks man. I ate a permanent ban in a comment chain where some people were being weird about Pizza Cake (popular comic artist if you're unaware, people on reddit are extremely weird about her) accusing her of misandry or something, and I said "omg she should be sentenced to death! Do you goobers even hear yourselves?". Ban reason was inciting violence.

I appealed, twice, and the second was actually successful, but through some technical glitch, they never actually unbanned me and I couldn't appeal it again because it was already "successful."

The thing that really fucking sucked was that I was right in the middle of a fundraiser for charity, and a lot of that money was raised on reddit. I eventually got my account actually reinstated by asking on an alt account on a weekly askreddit thread run by an admin, but like six weeks later, absolutely sucked to lose all that momentum.

[–] mafishfayda@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Honestly I don't understand what's going on with reddit! I got banned by mistake once, and reddit asked me to update my email and password. But even after I did, the ban still wasn't lifted!

[–] EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It gets worse every year too. I feel like I'm constantly running into terrible content but people who are generally harmless get banned forever for sarcasm.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

most of its AI driven bots anyways.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

that change your password seems to be intentional by reddit to confirm thier ban against you.(they probably want to tie it to your email address)

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

im in another forum, where people have thier "business" through reddit, but its from just using spamming though. one thing reddit doesnt like is people promoting any kind of business, or fundraising they arnt benefiting from.

but they sure like to allow someone like gary Sinese promoting military propaganda, yes has a strange obssesion with VETS, and while hes "donating to them" he seems to promote it heavily since hes a republican, One of his alleged reasons for leaving hollywood was his Sons passing, but im thinking its him recently coming out as a REPUBLICAN through and through, hollywood does not like associated out and about republicans.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They use mostly AI to moderate, so unlikely they will ever see your appeal. only an ADMIN can lift a ban. afte ri was banned, i was appealing almost every day last year, until i stopped, recently i made a new account(after 1+years getting ban). you arnt losing anything, i was lurking for that 1+year, while i was on lemmy.

also satisfying my curiosity of how people are getting banned, including the of accounts, i went to another forum. Most people reddit is lurking instead, because of the fear of being banned.

reddit mostly is bots right now, reddit suddenly lost alot of engagement because AI stopped scraping it because its just AI posting AI generated reposts.

[–] Contramuffin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sorry to hear that. My suspicion is that there's nothing you could have done to successfully appeal. The stories that I've heard here sounds like the entire ban appeal process is just a kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare, and it's only getting worse over time

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

only the admins can unban people, thats why theres next no succesful appeals. i hear success stories once in a while on the shadowban sub, it seems like its an extremely rare event.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’m just scared of it getting rejected again somehow

dude. there is life after reddit. it's a shithole.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, you're right. The transition from being a terminally online Redditor and now being banned from it makes you realize just how much of your life has been consumed by it

I mean, I almost got the Grass Toucher achievement for crying out loud

In some ways, I guess it's not so bad to have the opportunity to see past it

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I banned Reddit. No regrets.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm guessing your life got better after you stopped using it? Heh, maybe mine will

I'm trying really hard to see the upside of things. Like, maybe the fact that my life feels so empty now... just shows exactly how addicted to Reddit I was

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I'll be completely real with you.

I'm not saying Lemmy is a magical world of unicorns and rainbows where everyone is bursting with love and respect, but my life, or at least the part of it I spent staring at my phone, DID get better.

I was subscribed to A LOT of Reddit drama subs. Originally, it was because I would be going through some shit and wanted to talk it out with others, but they stayed in my subscriptions and every day I found myself getting sucked into the drama of people I would never meet.

When I started my Lemmy account, it was a blank slate. I only added communities that were fun and interesting. Every now and then I get into some heated drama, but it's not as constant as it was on Reddit, and now, when I put my phone down, I just feel less angry and depressed than I did on Reddit.

Oh, and don't be afraid to block people that ruin your day.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

i got sucked into some sub drama, and that got me banned, or my reporting people denied. like Youtube, livestream subs.

[–] Rod_Orm@piefed.world 4 points 1 week ago

Migrate to topicle.com

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 3 points 1 week ago

Just stop going. It's a broken mess.

[–] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It's so much kinder here. People help you learn, rather than ridicule you for being wrong. Stay, help build this little tree fort into something grand, friend.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

This place really is growing on me

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

its the large subs that people are drawn to, most of its politics, news, celebs, musci,,etc, all the ASK subs, or country/location subs. niche subs, with low content, or repost seems to the best. and using powersuite you nuke your comments eventually.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

You should ponder the fact that a website ban has you depressed. You shouldn’t allow a corporate entity to hold that power over you. You’re just a revenue stream to them

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 2 points 1 week ago

Read this article someone else posted; very interesting stuff.

I've been banned on reddit so many times I've gotten the 'permanent' ban message for the last 4 or so. That place changed. It's very intolerant and has no sense of humor. My first account was 11 years old at the time of first banning. After that first ban, I probably got banned every year for many years running.

No sense of humor. No sense of proportion. No sense that this is an anonymous internet forum.

[–] FoxAlive@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

No one here is ever going tell you to appeal the ban or return to reddit. If you are looking for advice how to get unbanned or what else you can do this is not the place.

If you are mad and looking to vent, and go off on how much you hate reddit... Then welcome home.

[–] insanemantis@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I'm going to submit my second appeal once I've worked up the courage. Genuinely just here for emotional support
