Post guidelines

Title formatPost title should mirror the news source title. If you don't like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.
URL formatPost URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.
[Opinion] prefixOpinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn't explictly endorse.

Right before the midterms in America.

This is gonna be bad for MAGA

By "Yandex bot" and "Russian bot" what do they mean?

Do we mean "bot", like a social media account that pretends to be an authentic human user, but is actually a "bot", or some other version of something inauthentic? Or do we mean the crawlers that Yandex sends out to crawl websites to refresh its search index?

[–] esc@piefed.social 3 points 2 hours ago

Search engine crawlers.

Bot traffic describes any non-human Internet traffic...

~~This is in ukraine’s best iterest.~~

~~Russian (and Chinese among others) bots drive political unrest, primarily by supporting right wing and nationalist provocateurs to destabilize governments that support Ukraine or NATO.~~

~~If Zelensky can silence the trolls, he has a better chance at continued support.~~

Disregard. It’s Yandex bots, not troll farm bots.

This is a one two punch, not only does it hurt Russia's interests, it may cost the GOP in the upcoming election. Nice way to respond to Trump buying Russian Diesel.

I wonder of we'll be able to see the effects on pubic opinion. E.g. if political polling will show a noticeable change upon yandex being shut down

If only you read the article you'd realize the "bot network" they're talking about is indexing websites so the Yandex search engine and related services can find them. The article literally gloats how "this will make the Internet slow or unusable for Russians".

But of course they knew what they were doing with the headline. Targeting Euro-Americans who think the reason their politicians are corrupt is secret Russian (or Chinese) influence and dissenting opinions on the internet are Russian bots.

Or I might just be one of the 10% of the bots that are still coming through!

So do you think that there will be an effect on public opinion? Not necessarily limited to the west. I would expect that severely limited access to internet in Russia might affect public opinion there too

I'm unaware of civilization's general impression of that population's bikini area hygiene, TBF. 🫡

Oh jeez it took me a while to realise my typo haha

Either/or. I am wondering about the effects on public opinion generally

effects on pubic opinion

Unfortunately Russian Z-patriots are much much more hypnotized even than US MAGAs.

They need intensive deprogramming and reintroduction into civil society. Temporarily cutting off just one source of propaganda helps a little, but does not put the cancer into remission.

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 12 hours ago

If religion's history as a whole is considered, they're more than likely to simply glom onto the next big lie that puts them in the in-crowd. 🧏🏼‍♂️

[–] FridaVanMercury@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

They'll 100% move them somewhere else as quickly as they can.

I think we all understand the landscape isn't that simple anymore. Data centers aren't cheap and easy to spin up.
