So. I never watched the show in order until recently. Im on the late season 2 episode with the wormhole and I think I was scratching my head before with some other episodes as I thought it was two way. That episode finally made it clear it was one way. Also will add a mildly infuriating but do a community search for stargate does not bring up this community.

I don't think Stargate really even needs a separate meme community like this. Lemmy just isn't big enough to require that level of separation. But oh well, this is the biggest Stargate community now.

I dont remeber ever seeing what happens if something goes the wrong way, does that ever happen?

In one of the SG-1 episodes, the gang is stuck in some kind of underground jail where the captors just throw people and food through the gate. There’s no DHD on the jail side. So some of the prisoners try to escape by going into the wormhole but it’s the wrong way. Some also let themselves get swallowed by the woosh.

Gang escapes by using some mcguffin electric tree roots and manually dialing the gate.

The connection does allow radio frequencies to travel in both directions. If I remember correctly. So it's one-way for travel, two-way for communication.

I can’t remember if some of the UAVs are wire guides or all RF but they work fine until someone stomps on them

And fluids, like water and air(?), don't come through by themselves, if the gate is inside a large body of that fluid. If it's a stream of grain or soup, it does go through though. Oh, and gravity can come through.

It makes a lot more sense when you learn that the rippling puddle effect isn't actually the wormhole itself. The wormhole is microscopic, the Stargate is more like a transporter pad that breaks you down and squirts you through it to reassemble on the other side. So there's actually an Ancient computer doing all the work, and it can "decide" how some of those rules work in an arbitrary manner.

Which does make me wonder why the heck the Ancients designed the Stargate to disassemble stuff that enters the puddle in a situation where it's got nowhere to send it. I guess that was all long before OSHA.

yes. I definately see that. I guess its to way if you can move at the speed of light.

Chevron7 is the meme Stargate community.

doh. I got nothing with stargate then then wracked my brain and was like. its chevron something.

It is in the about for this community too.

If they aren't two-way, the hell did they need the shield for? How do they go somewhere and come back through the same gate?

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 20 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Each connection is one-way. They need to close the connection and connect back to go back.

That's also why they have so many problems of not finding a dialing device on the other end.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (2 children)

Riiight...Forgot that part. 🫩 🤦‍♂️

Don't remember if they ever said or showed what happens if you try to go in the wrong way, either. Did they? 🤔

There seems to be a directional force on things, like a current. Shown most dramatically on Universe's opening, being that such a long trip gave a lot of push. So I'm guessing if you tried to stick your hand back into it, the field would push back.

And it would need that push, because what if something just rolled into a gate gently. Can't have that get stuck, so it's like an automatic clearing effect of the wormhole.

Remember the one Atlantis one where the puddle jumper gets stuck. They have to give enough of a push to get the rest of it moving into the gate, but it came out a bit faster than that push was.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Oh yeah, I do remember the stuck puddle jumper. Wasn't one of the problems that it was slowly inching one way and the guys inside would be crushed against the gate's portal if they didn't fix it quick enough?

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 2 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

No, they got the wings retracted which is why it stopped, and also why it wouldn't pull in fully (if what I said about a force was true). The problem was that when the gate finally would close due to their built in timer, the puddle jumper would be cut into, one part would still make it to Atlantis, but the guys in the back would suddenly be in vacuum in space with the severed back part.

So they had to find a way to make it inch forward, now that it wasn't stuck. Hence the final part that I won't spoil here.

[–] Chaf@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

one part would still make it to Atlantis

Not quite, things only go through in one piece, so the front half of the jumper would just disappear. Otherwise everyone could have just stepped through, and they could have waited for the gate to shut down, "only" losing the jumper in the process.

I'm sure that has been mentioned before that episode at some point, the rules aren't really consistent though. In S3E17 (A Hundred Days) Teal'c shoots a harpoon with a rope attached to him through the gate, which should not have hit anything on the other side until Teal'c makes it through the gate. I'm somewhat certain, that's not the only example of contradicting rules for the stargate 😁

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I think you're partially correct, but when the gate shuts off, it does sever things. Like in "The Torment of Tantalus" at the beginning and what happens to his air hose. So at that point there is one thing inside the gate.

I thought there was a reason they didn't want to just step through and wait for the gate to stop. But I can't recall.

[–] Chaf@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

That's one of the things I'd add to the "the rules aren't really consistent"-list :D Or at that point rather, they haven't figured the rules out yet.

In 38 minutes they explicitly say, that the front half simply "disappears". McKay even jokes about preferring that over dying in the vacuum of space.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 1 points 5 hours ago

That's right, so that's why they had to figure it out otherwise they were all dead, regardless of where they were.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Ugh... I'm gonna have to rewatch tbe entire series. Maaaaaan 😩 (😃)

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 9 hours ago

my rewatch spawned a rewatch!

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 1 points 10 hours ago

Re-watchable (or re-readable) is always a sign of greatness. Don't know if you're a LotR fan, but even if not, you understand the point... Stargate is one of those.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 10 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

The shield is for hostiles incoming. I think that was established within the first episode, you dial in, send the code, and the shield isn't used. And the movie set up the one way part, otherwise there's no plot to find the dial home address.

That's just how that physics works. You can't have a water slide go both directions.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

you know I started rewatching the series but did not think to do the movie again. which I did not like as much.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The series is far better, but that's not fair to the movie since it had a unique idea to try and piece together in one shot. The series corrected some of the issues and ran with it, and because it could developed the characters and stories better. And still gave numerous credits and nods to the film that started it all.

It's okay to not like the movie that much, there's a lot of things wrong with it. But more that's right. :)

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I mean I think we see this in the modern age. series used to be seen as lesser than movies but now series are seen as kinda a better medium to tell the whole story. I think that is why we have ones with one or only a few seasons now because there is really only so much to the story.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 2 points 9 hours ago

Maybe some of them. The others only have one or two seasons, if that, because the network/studio/whatever is all about a quick buck and not actually seeing the story through properly. By the time one is aired or streaming, they've already got their eye on the next one.

You also have to have good writers who see more than just the starting content. Look at Rogue One>Andor, all born from taking a single line at the start of a movie and asking, what happened there?

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Great analogy! Also goes well with that big “splash” when you first connect

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 2 points 11 hours ago

Yeah, whole knows what kind of scary physics is going on with that pretty splash and whirlpool as the gate manages to fight for stability.
