The benefits still outweigh the costs. Simple as that.

am an Australian, live in a rural area, had an EV for 2 years, a BYD, have solar panels on my roof, mostly charge the EV off the solar panels.
Making your own fuel at home is surely "the dream" ? that said, i lived car free in the city for 3 years before that, which was awesome.
Thanks to really dumb emissions regulations we have gigantic vehicles... in the US light trucks have way looser emissions requirements. Also emissions per wheelbase area is a thing, which anyone with a functioning brain correctly predicted would cause vehicles to grow in size since it's easier to make a longer wheelbase than to improve efficiency....
For those who really cannot bear to live without a car: buy a used sports car (aerodynamic) from decades ago for as cheap as possible, convert it to electric w/ battery, charge it via solar or hydro or whatever makes most sense for your area. Simple.
This sounds removedly more expensive than buying a new electric car.
I bought an EV. Fuck gas prices.
Same lol, my EV costs me an extra 50 bucks a month or so on my electric bill for my commute.
When I needed a gas rental for a month I was paying ~75 a WEEK to keep it going and that was their most "economical" model since they didn't have EVs. This was when gas prices were somewhat ok before they went off the deep end. I can't imagine it'd be any less than like 100 a week if I had to do it again now lmao
The same reason they idle their parked trucks for an hour. Because they know it drives sensible people crazy!
My understanding is that dealerships have historically enjoyed larger markups on big vehicles and have therefore pushed them. When people complained "But I can't afford that!", they said it's okay because they'll lease finance it so that you're essentially subscribing to rather than owning the vehicle. More $ still for the dealer.
Now with EVs, apparently the math changes. Big vehicles actually cost a lot more to produce because batteries are expensive. So smaller cars hit the sweet spot. Yet in North America, the auto sector remains fixated on big and are trying to build giant EVs nobody wants and that probably won't sell.
Gas isn't the main cost of driving a vehicle, even at $6 per gallon.
American garbage vehicles are designed to burn as much fuel as fast as possible.
They don't have much else in stock, and a lot of folks bought into the idea that they're safer (for them).
They'll say that it's to have room in it but my old hatchback has more. They'll say it's to be more comfortable but it's a car, not a couch.
Debt will claim them
Because it's manly.
Idiots.
This is the answer to so many problems.
