How is this possible when his dad just attempted a coup d’état? Do they have some really popular policies, or is Lula failing at somewhere?

[–] ttayh@lemmy.zip 3 points 10 hours ago

Cause

  • Lula's term was a lukewarm nothing burguer

  • which shot itself on the foot year one by limiting how much the govmt can invest

  • Lula is campaigning as if it was 2022

  • both sides are campaigning on "least bad"

  • Out of 26 yrs in this millenium, Brasil had a Workers Party govnmt in 18. People want something different

  • Lula / PT work really hard to de-politise politics, and to be the only viable option on the left (by punching left)

  • Lula's broad front is filled with ppl (senators, congressppl, etc) that are indistinguishable from Bolsonaro's camp

Lula is no saint. His party is involved in a ton of corruption schemes. The last 4 years saw the economy in "stagflation": low growth, high inflation, high interest rates. People don't see any meaningful change in the past 4 years.

If Lula's party (worker's party) didn't suppress the other left parties in the last 20 years, there would be a viable alternative. The election now is like 5 candidates from th right, each worse than the other, vs Lula. If you don't like Lula and want to oust his party, your only option is basically fascism.

"What would you prefer sir, the current corrupt government and feeling insecure to leave your home due to crime, or the fascist that promises to shoot bandits and will become the new corrupt government?"

Yeah, as I feared, the bolsokid won the 1st turn by 2%. It will be an uphill battle to turn this around, and it might not even matter that much because the legislative was overwhelmingly won by the far right. We better brace ourselves... there has never been an election for president where the 2nd place won in the 2nd turn since democracy was reinstated in 1985.

The fact that this is even a close race is incredibly worrying.

On one hand you got the jovial but aging left wing president who has already been president for 12 years (non-consecutive).

On the other hand you have the textbook definition of nepotism, the son of a corrupt politician who tried a coup and failed. Said son is also known to be corrupt and had multiple scandals, but just because he's right wing, half the country supports him...

Why is it that right wingers always scream about accountability and rule of the law, yet when it comes to their own candidates their heads are so far up their own arse, even the world's worst surgeon could do a simultaneous appendectomy and root canal with a single slice of a scalpel?

Why is it that no right winger, regardless of their country or location, can see the dead obvious hypocrisy? And how is it that people would still elect someone who tried to forcefully remain in power after he's been democratically told to get fucked?

You have to remember that with conservatives, the hypocrisy is a feature, not a bug. This appears to be universal, not just a part of conservatism in the United States.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

They justify it in their mind as "Everyone else is corrupt, I need to be corrupt to keep up." Instead of trying to make things better.

Disclaimer: I haven't voted for a bolsonaro and never will

Lula is no saint and has been involved in one of the biggest corruption scandals this country ever had. His only positive is that he isn't bolsonaro

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

one of the biggest corruption scandals this country ever had

It was the largest one in history until the one from Flavio Bolsonaro... And on what was the largest one until that famous one got caught.

And also in coordinating a criminal voting ring in the Legislative

Still both of them added up don't come anything close to the Bolsonaro's one, and the Bolsonaro's father coup attempt was way more explicit.

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I never said he was worse than bolsonaro. I just said he isnt a saint

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 0 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

you were framing it as worst than boslanaro.

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Literally wasn't, the poster was agreeing with me look at his follow up comment. Learn to read

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

I was not disagreeing.

[–] RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Want he cleared? While operation carwash was real, it became a political weapon doing US style overcharging shakedowns?

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nah. They just decided the evidence couldn't be used but the evidence was real, like having a video of a murder but the judge said the camera was illegal. He also admitted on video of making use of the house that got a free renovation.

At best his entire party is corrupt but he won't condemn them, at worst he is extremely corrupt

[–] RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why didn't the left move to a different party or at least a new leader?

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Brazil has multiple parties. I myself voted for another left candidate. The problem is that everyone has been brainwashed into only considering 2 candidates

[–] RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

That sucks, I think presidential systems tend favor 2 parties/coalitions, is there any chance continuous elections between 2 bad choices could lead to that kind of reform, I think most presidential weakenings were in former USSR countries as they understandibly didn't want to have presidents getting too strong.

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Believe or not bolsonaro (father) is from a party that wasnt one of the main 2 so there is a chance of breaking the duopoly, unfortunately as you can see, that doesnt always improve the situation (its just a different duopoly now)
