[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

There shouldn't be any left. This shit is unforgivable.

[–] DeadEndLink@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago

"Snow Birds" should have flew the coup as soon as Homeland Security started shooting protestors.

Yup, the snow birds deserve it.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 days ago

I'm having a hard time finding my empathy on this one.

This. You take a lifetime of wealth from Canada and then piss it down the drain in the most backwards part of the USA.

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 days ago

I don't have sympathy for the guy having a second home complaining he has to pay more tax. There is an easy solution

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Hahaha, this is especially a great idea to entice the rich folks from New York who were telling everyone that Mayor Mamdani was going make them flee to Florida. /s

If you're Canadian and you still have property in Florida by that point, that's on you.

Are they really this dumb? Like how do they see this working?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 days ago

Are they really this dumb?

Uh, yes?

[–] plateee@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They don't. What this will do is give their Florida supporters some red meat. Meanwhile, income will drop and they will have to make "unfortunate" decisions like gutting any state funded education, make more cuts to grants for the poor and elderly, kill off any housing assistance, and generally make sure the population in Florida is uneducated and poor (thus keeping their base intact).

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

They can also pin the blame on Canadians by saying something like, "not enough Canadians are coming and buying property, those big bad meanies!"

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago

Are they really this dumb?

They may not be, but they know their voters are this dumb

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Not big on forthought, these people

[–] BC_viper@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Property values are about to plummet.

If you look at who is pushing for and against it, then it becomes more interesting. It's like this, the people arguing that it will cut funds aren't lying, it's just it will directly affect them. Some of these officials that press against the amendment that are in office make $250k to $400k+ and that doesn't include all the other perks they get so they will do anything to keep their pay. The budget expenses have went up roughly 50% in the last six years. Yet there's always a shortage. Florida is as corrupt as it gets. There's also a lot of misinformation.

The dangus of a governor is great at pissing everyone off.

For years, Canadian owned property in FL has had a surtax. Primarily due to property tax increases being capped at 3% for "real Floridians" that skyrocket to "normal rate"+ high annual increases, when a Canadian buys the home.

Wonder if there is going to be a spree of arson for the insurance so some of the remaining snowbirds get out.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago

It's Florida, no one can afford insurance.
