Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

When I was a waiter, I was always annoyed when customers would look to me to approve their wine selection. My thinking was if I said "excellent choice", it would imply we stock wines that would have been a bad choice. And I know there's a whole weird thing about pairing wine with food, but if you're buying wine for the table, that kind of goes out the window; and the best wine, I always thought, was a wine you like--end of story.

Anyway, just another job I got fired from.

Somehow, I have had the opposite experience (not with wine).

“Huh. The ketchup-infused crabcakes? That sounds interesting! I’ll get that.”
“……You want…ketchup-infused…crabcakes?”
“Uh…Yeah.”
“Uh…okay, do you want us to put the ketchup…like, into the crabcake?”
“…??? However it normally comes! It’s…on the menu!”

customers would look to me to approve

Yeah, never go for a superlative. Just "good choice" with an inscrutable* smile.

* I need to retain ambiguity otherwise I go crazy in no time. "Polite, keeping my (critical) thoughts to myself." There's something to the cliché of the English butler.

I used to sell shoes at a snooty department store, and that sounds very similar to my experience. How to be a good shoe salesman? Present a bunch of options, see which one gets the best initial reaction, then snow them about how good their choice is for whatever purpose they said they want it for. Doesn't matter if the shoe doesnt match their use case; people dont want to be informed or get the best product, they want to be told that their taste is good and they'll pay a premium for that service

This is honestly why I hate most sales people. I wish they were actually knowledgeable about the products, listened to what I need, then gave recommendations that fit those needs.

That basically never happens outside of very niche products though. They either will just try to sell the most expensive thing that vaguely resembles something I want, or will know nothing and rely solely on what I choose. Basically makes most sales people detrimental instead of helpful.

Being honest and helping people doesnt pay the bills the way flattery does. I'm financially comfortable enough now that I can afford to have principles, but I sure as hell didn't care about any of that when a missed sale might have meant a missed meal for myself or worse, for my younger brother. Imo it's a "don't hate the player, hate the game (capitalism)" situation

I know why it happens, but I still hate it.

I used to work at Best Buy and it was heartbreaking seeing kids passionate about technology and really wanting to help people slowly realize that they were only there to drive profit to the company by selling plans and credit cards.

Edit: This is also relatively-new Best Buy. BB used to have specialized sales staff and cared about its relationship to its customers. Now its been progressively enshittified, raising stock prices, but it's ultimately going to become a storefront on Amazon.

I was just watching SaTC and Charlotte hired a bridal consultant to help her shop for a wedding dress... and that's exactly how he operated. He would just look to her and amplify her decision. If she was wishy-washy on a dress, he'd override the salesman's arguments with a loud "NEXT!" When he saw she loved a dress, he couldn't stop gushing about it. His job wasn't really content-specific in this case, it was just emotional support. The comedy of the situation, from my perspective, is that he's billed as an "expert" with intimate knowledge to bring, but obviously the job 100% relies on a making your clients happy so really the main thing you're being hired for is reading people.

And the quicker your clients make a decision, the sooner you can go home or on to the next sale.

I'm kinda on the spectrum.

In my case when I worked as a cashier on a "premium" store it was the other way, people don't care what you think they are purchasing, it was literally more like "Aha, I already know that I have good taste, I'm not asking for your opinion"

When I was a waiter, I was always annoyed when customers would look to me to approve their wine selection.

I'm not a wine person, but aren't there some wines that are supposed to be paired with some foods? Like, uh...white wines with fishes, but red wines with red meats, if I remember correctly? I mean, if someone doesn't know anything about that and comes in, that seems like it'd be reasonable to ask the waiter for advice.

This reminder me of videogames, you are level 100 and buy a level 1 item and the NPC like: You have great taste! This will help you in your journey!

I always end up beating the game with 10+ Butt Elixirs that I never used.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Man I wish TJs had butt ointment, or idk, TJ branded pumpkin flavored condoms or something.

"Oh, have you tried those? I love them, so tasty."
