This pull request was merged a couple weeks ago that subtly renders street lamps as "a simple dot with halo". Stable versions of Carto seem to be released roughly twice a year, and this one just missed the latest cutoff (v6.1.0 was released three weeks ago). Still, if you don't typically add street lamps because they don't show up on e.g. Carto, now's a good time so they show up on the next release.

For those unfamiliar with the name, Carto is the default rendering style you see at openstreetmap.org.

I've mapped close to 4000 of these in my home county over the last month or so. I'm excited!

However, I read in the OSM Discord server (and it wasn't a majority of people saying it) that you're supposed to add the street lamp node at the light source, not the pole in the ground. That doesn't make much sense to me, but if true, I may have done a LOT of them wrong.

Nah don't worry about it.

If that was the case, adding the tags light_count= and lamp_mount= as well as the ref= on the pole (as suggested on the wiki) would make no sense.
Also the lights are so close together that mapping them seperatly is ridicoulus.
It also clashes with the common understanding of the word 'street light', which obviously doesn't refer to a single led in the lamp.
What even counts as light? A single led? A group of leds in a housing?

And finally, there is ultimately no right or wrong in OSM. As long as it exists in the present in public you can map it. If you want to map individiual lights and put them in a relation with the pole, knock yourself out. But if you don't then don't

Fuck yeah, I mapped dozens of them at my old apartment just for completeness, I can't wait to see what it looks like with them all.

I mean yeah you can visualize any data in osm with a custom map, but I mean I can't wait to see what it looks like in the default map, so I can see how other people who aren't using custom views or have explicitly enabled stuff I've edited see my edits.
