Dune: Awakening (single-player)

Been wanting to play the game since it released but have no interest in PvP at all. Almost got it a few times before just because I wanted to play it but held off until now.
The patience here is more "waiting to see if they add a single-player feature and then once that was announced waiting for it to release.

About 30 hours in and I'm surprised by how good it is and having a blast with all parts of the game. The combat just keeps getting better and the survival aspects are great (which is rare IMO) with the sun and sand worms being a constant factor that shapes how you play.
The Holtzman shields work very well for a game too, both for yourself and on enemies. You need to be smart and pick off unshielded enemies first then lure out one or a few shielded ones to handle in melee, doing fast hits or using skills (like voice stuff) to stund them so you can get that slow hit in that gets through the shield.
Exploration is fun with many options for all parts of it. You can climb almost everything like many other games like this but there are several cool gadgets too. A grapple hook that feels great, a category of devices that affect gravity in different ways, like decreasing it which allows you to jump higher and further, floating, fall slowing etc. but not all at once, you pick one which fits your playstyle or depending on what environment you're gonna be in.
The vehicles feel good and I like the systems for each part having their own health bars, and there are several different additions like storage, boosters, scanners, mining equipment but you can only have one on at a time (at least for the tiers I'm at).
Crafting, building and resource collection is fun too, overall a very well designed game.

Look Outside! I'm continually impressed at how seamlessly the game blends JRPG mechanics with Survival Horror. The writing is incredible, and surprisingly empathetic for a story about people transforming into body horror abominations in your apartment complex.

Valheim went 1.0 release, so started up a new server to play it through through the final biome.

I mentioned last week that I planned on being impatient with the release of Control Resonant, but that did not end up going well for me. Where I live has really shitty satellite internet, so in order to download most games I need to make a 1.5 hour drive to a family member's beach house to take advantage of their sweet normal-world download speeds. Got there Tuesday, preloaded the game Wednesday, and was on my way by Thursday morning. Unfortunately, the devs pushed what was supposed to be an update/hotfix Thursday for the release of the game, but that got bungled and resulted in preloaded versions of the game being deleted automatically, which I found out about once I had made it home and got ready to boot up the game. Honestly, I wasn't even mad, I knew patient gaming is the way and I chose to stray from that path. Oh well, way she goes, boys.

So now I'm kind of considering jumping ship on my plans for Control Resonant and instead doing a replay of some other Remedy games. Specifically Alan Wake Remastered, then Control, then Alan Wake 2. I've been meaning to replay the first Control for quite some time and the Alan Wakes should mesh nicely with the upcoming spooky season.

Additionally, I think I'm going to put an indefinite hold on buying games through Steam because GOG just lines up better with my values/interests and usually encourages a more patient approach to gaming.

And as far as what I'm going to play this week, I think it's the perfect time to do another playthrough of Crow Country.

You can still refund and repurchase on sale later to save money, if you haven't crossed the 2-hour barrier.

I will be buying Control: Resonant eventually because I'm curious what a proper action game from Remedy looks like, but I'll definitely be waiting for the price to drop below $20, potentially even closer to $10.

Classic Oblivion (Can't believe I've lived long enough to see horrors beyond my imagination), with about 30 miss. Better looking bodies, QoL fixes, leveled lists, new races, romance mod (needy Argonian waifu), and some new weapons and armor.

[–] NelDel@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 hours ago

Love Oblivion, the window mod is amazing (allows you to actually see through windows instead of the bright blue light they usually have). Anvil is my favorite city, but I love how distinct they all are

Wife and I are grinding remaining skins in Sonic Racing Crossworlds which is our favorite local multiplayer racing game these days. It's really good! Actually better than Mario Kart

Picked up HeartGold the other day. So many memories playing Gold back in the day.

I've been jumping back and forth between three very different games since last week. They differ in gameplay, themes, atmosphere, art style and age, leading to a pretty significant whiplash when switching between them. These titles are: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Cyberpunk 2077 and Dressmaker.

Castlevania: Circle of the MoonIt seems I've hit a wall with this one - not in terms of difficulty but rather annoyance. The further I get, the more annoying new enemies (or their variants) become. I'm not going to say "the game is bad now" or anything like that, I just need a short break to avoid burnout. I'm also back home so it's harder to just step away from my desktop and hop on the Steam Deck but that's a "me" issue.

I'll be back soon.

Cyberpunk 2077I keep chipping away on this from time to time in an attempt to finally complete the main story. I managed to reach Phantom Liberty ending a few months ago but I never got past the start of act 3 of the base game - I complete the parade, do a few side quests and that's pretty much where my playthroughs usually end.

I've updated and expanded my mod list, refreshed motivation to continue and decided to complete the game "eventually" rather than "as soon as possible". I had to drop the difficulty a notch as my idea of playing extremely underpowered character doesn't mesh well with the mod adjusted damage and the amount or type of mandatory combat this game has. I've been also having some issues with crashes when reloading saves - can't say redoing sections in such circumstances is a welcome prospect.

So I'm back again, right before the parade. Can I stick around till the finish line this time? No idea. The only thing I can do is try.

At least I got some neat screenshots again.

DressmakerAs the title suggests, it's a cosy crafting game where you design and make dresses. There are dozens of individual dress pieces you can mix and match to come up with your ideal design, huge number of materials you can use to piece it together and tons of accessories to make it look exactly the way you want it.

Gameplay is also really good. You start by taking measurements of your client, then selecting the design for each piece of the dress (bodice, collar, sleeves, dress) to fulfil their requirements. Once that's done you have to cut the necessary pieces from the material (gotta spread them the right way to avoid waste), align these pieces on a mannequin and get to sewing. The last part is a simple mini-game, where you manipulate the piece to keep sewing according to the marker - the better you do, the higher quality of the dress. What's really great is the fact that the controls during this part are set up to simulate the act of real sewing (you press space to advance and mouse to rotate the fabric).
Last, but not least, there are accessories. This is technically an optional step (at least in the requests I've played so far) but some well placed additions can completely transform your creations so it's definitely worth playing with.

Besides client commissions, you can also just design and sell your own ideas. In this case you get to skip the first step (measurements) and don't have to stick to specific requirements (style, main colour etc) - simply go wild with your imagination and make the dress of your dreams. Or whatever you're able to do with your available funds/materials.

It's a fresh release (came out last week) so not exactly a good subject for this community but it's great so I wanted to mention it. It's also really cheap (about €15 without the launch discount, I believe) which is pretty awesome.
To be clear, I'm talking about this game, not the application with similar name also available on Steam.

Roblox unfortunately

I started FTL for the first time a few days ago and it's hard to put down. You look at screenshots and it doesn't look too interesting, but it's well-designed and clearly very polished.

Even though the gameplay mechanics are quite different, Loop Hero feels spiritually very similar to me.

Finally got around to playing Rogue Trader, its a great game, been sitting on it for a while. Its a bit hairy to get into, but rewarding when you do.

Blur

I picked up a cheap Xbox 360 last week so I can use Bad Update and Blur is my go to game. It's a shame it's not backwards compatible on the newer consoles because it's an excellent combat racer.

I fell into Frostpunk again. I love the game but have the unhealthy habit of spending way too much time in front of it and never stopping after a reasonable time.

Me: ... Is that the sun?

RTS games. Never again.

[–] mohab@piefed.social 1 points 2 hours ago

A few years ago I played an Empire Earth skirmish for 13 hours. This was the last time I played an RTS.

[–] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago

Exactly. These games have no chapters or natural moments to stop playing, so you keep playing forever😅

Sniper elite v2 remastered. Pretty fun on the steam deck with gyro aiming.

I just picked up Satisfactory on sale and will probably give it a try later this week.

I saw that yesterday too, I was messing around with it for a bit. Really cool.

Legend of Grimrock it's an old school style dungeon crawler.. brings back memories of games from the early 90s for me.

[–] dingleberrylover@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Played it around 2012/2013. I really enjoyed it! They absolutely nailed the aesthetics, mechanics and music.

I just downloaded and started DC Task Force, a free fan game like those old 2D beat-em-ups, last night. It's pretty cool how there's almost an entire open DC universe to explore and fight in, with actually a ton of characters to collect and play as, and a lot of cool detail throughout.

ZVitor, the guy who made DC Task Force has also made a bunch of other free fan games like Marvel Infinity War (basically DCTF but Marvel), and remakes of old arcade classics like Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage and X-Men Arcade.

It's super fun! Each character has alternate color palettes you can play with too. Like Batman has a colorway that looks like his TAS version, Superman has one that looks like MoS and a TAS version too. I've only unlocked Hal so far, but he has a red color palette

Edit: he also has a YouTube channel with the same name where you can check out gameplay of his different projects.
