Better article/source, Erin in the Morning: "Texas Dem. Senate Candidate Talarico Clarifies He Still Opposes Statewide Ban On Trans Athletes" (arc)

Texas’s state Rep. James Talarico, who is running for Senate, has clarified his stance on equal rights protections for trans athletes during a Sept. 24 interview at The Texas Tribune Festival. Talarico sat down for a one-on-one live event with The Tribune’s Matthew Watkins.

“You say, ‘I will oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports if it risks safety or fairness,” the moderator said. “This contrasts with your vote on SB 15 that banned this practice statewide. Have you changed positions on this topic?”

“No, my position is exactly the same,” Talarico jumped in. “The reason I opposed that bill is because it was a blanket statewide ban without any appreciation for nuance.”

...

“I supported an amendment to that bill to allow local officials—education officials, local sports officials—to decide on an athlete by athlete, sport by sport basis, if there’s safety and fairness. That has always been my North Star and it’s gonna continue to be my North Star,” he continued.

“I’m also always gonna stand up to politicians who bully students, who bully kids, to score political points. My faith teaches me that every child is made in the image of God. And so I’m always gonna push back against efforts to grandstand, when it comes to our students, and I’ll always fight to make sure … every sport is safe and fair.”

“Those are not mutually exclusive goals,” Talarico concluded. “That’s exactly what I did in the state house. It’s exactly my position now. It’ll be my position in the US Senate.”

How on earth can this be considered a moderate stance? Just say “state laws should not be where we address these issues” and be done with it. If there’s nuance, then it’s something to be sorted by the sports league itself. If there’s just transphobia, it needs to be called out and then ignored.

He'd said something a lot less clear at the beginning of the week (which the Texas Tribune article is about), but when progressives told him that wasn't good enough he made a more clear statement (which is what the Erin in the Morning article focuses on)

I would have rather just shared the second article, but substack blogs get removed in this community so it had to hitch a ride on a slightly out of date article

At any rate, my ultimate takeaway from this is that I still don't like some things Talarico has said on the campaign trail, but I think he will listen to his base and do the right thing when he's pressured in office (well, assuming he wins his race anyway)

e; Also, above and beyond campaign rhetoric, one place where he's still dead wrong on policy is (from the EitM article)

Talarico still pledges to support a national ban on surgical interventions that help transgender youth, which may include top surgery or hormone implants.

Yes, this. Even the most rather meh Democrat is going to be somebody you can probably move on the issues.

Obama was not for gay marriage, either. People forget that. Just because a candidate is not dying on some hill for sports while running doesn't mean they are transphobic or will impose some transphobic agenda. Republicans keep trying to spring this trap on Democrats because they know it can be painted that way for some on the left, and of course, they have nothing else to talk about, since their party is busily fucking up everything for everyone right now.

Meanwhile, the Republicans have members that want to murder people for being gay or trans.

Talarico still pledges to support a national ban on surgical interventions that help transgender youth, which may include top surgery or hormone implants.

This is some crazy bullshit. This kind of thing should be between parents, the youth, and their doctor(s). A national ban? WTAF. He definitely needs to be moved on that.
