Pacifism is lovely and all, but it's not all "dubious foreign instigators".

I think most Europeans are just bemused at this point. The country that has been for decades defending its very specific constitutional amendment, about everyone having easy access to guns in order to fight tyranny, would then so easily capitulate to tyranny.

Agreed! I'm honestly surprised this comment hasn't been removed yet. I've been banned from communities for making very similar comments. We need to be able to openly discuss how to solve the problem of conservatives existing in order to solve the problem of conservatives existing.

Hello, I’m one of these people.

It’s not that dubious. Either Americans find the bravery, strength, courage and determination we all once tought was basic yank DNA inherent in their grandfathers and great grandfathers, and overthrow the corpo billionaire mob in the White House, House & Senate and Supreme Court, or - and this is where it gets selfish

Wait another few years to be liberated by a bunch of weird talking, second guessing wusses from shithole countries to come and do the liberation for you.

That’s the only loop I’m seeing, so you’re welcome for the encouragement.

The time to go to Ed Sheeran concerts, watch the superbowl and make a black friday shopping list is over, you’re under siege and you’re not acting like it. (Tbf, that last part goes for Europe too)

E: Sorry pele, I didn’t see you were the OP, but we established this disagreement before

The real doom loop:

  1. "Hey maybe we should try voting and boycotting companies?"
  2. "That will never work only violence works!"
  3. Some mentally unwell person shoots some people
  4. More fascist stuff is done as a response
  5. Go back to step 1

The revolutionary LARPers are in a symbiotic relationship with the fascists they clam to oppose.

I think my favorite was when Twitter showed country of origin and a lot of the "don't vote, it doesn't matter" people strangely were not from the US. Very curious. I'm extremely wary of astroturfing now.

In my observation: many Americans are resisting. The ones that are, even nonviolently are not cowards by any measure.

The ones that are continuing to support neoliberalism are weak. Revolution can't happen if they continue to obey their programming.

Not that I often find myself in this cycle, but I don't tend to let sub-literate yaps get under my skin, so 🤷🏼‍♂️

One of the fundamental falsehoods that is being pushed, and not just by foreign propaganda, is that revolution can only be violent. If we were able to organize crippling work shutdowns we would start to see results. The oligarchs still require a great deal of human labor to get what they want. The public could, theoretically, withdraw that and use it as leverage to move things back toward wealth equity. The problem is that it requires a greater consensus that we have been able to achieve, at least so far.

What about legislation that makes it illegal to strike like when the rail workers wanted to strike under Biden?

Carney is passing similar legislation in Canada.

[–] Curious_Canid@piefed.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It isn't surprising when a government makes the methods for opposing it illegal. That increases the risk involved, but it does not change the reasons for doing it or the effectiveness of those tactics. It isn't a matter of, "well, we might as well kill people, if both are illegal". There are a lot of reasons for preferring non-violent protest, beyond legality. It comes down to figuring out what is most likely to cause the change we want to see.

[–] Rat_in_a_hat@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And if it's illegal, and people still strike, what would be the outcome?

[–] Calfpupa@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It would still cripple capital production

[–] Rat_in_a_hat@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And historically, what has happened when people went on strike despite the government not condoning it? Plenty of examples to choose from

Translation "Who cares about your dependents, die for the revolution pussy that way the government can use you as an excuse to persecute your minority group harder!"

My response will always be congrats for being born in the right country asshole!

Pacifism is worthless, your alternative solutions are worthless, when someone else eventually does the fighting for you you're going to lie through your teeth and pretend you were behind them the whole time.
