Wow, im kind of surprised how terrible this is. Usually the posts in here are at least interesting. This is an actively bad advertisement. From any era for any product, this is ugly, poorly communicates and is completely forgettable. they cant all be great and MK usually has great ones so it's kind of fun to see such a huge miss actually lol thanks for sharing!
old game ads been all over the place - more often a miss than a hit so it's quite on brand.
The 90s was "edgy." This ad would have run in a magazine like WIRED or MAXIM that were heavily weighted toward male viewers in a fairly tight age bracket, and full of bold wording, intense imagery and garish colors. I agree that this woudln't work today, but I can tell you that I saw the image and immediately knew it was for MK after all these years, so clearly something had clicked at the time.
Im an '87 kid so I def know what you mean. And bad does not mean ineffective to be sure lol point well made!
I like the way the "3 new backgrounds" is something to point out back then
you underestimate how underwhelmed people were by MK3 (well, technically, they were underwhelmed by sheer lack of Scorpion for the most part)
