Did prices normalize and I missed my chance? It seems GPUs, RAM and SSDs haven't left the stratosphere in a year. The boeing space ship didn't stay up that long, and it was a boeing and thus not flight-worthy for most of its service period.
I think after this ends in 2 eyars - China will flood everyone with chips. their ram and gpu are becoming competative I can see another 2 years of this bullshit max.
GPUs and RAM are global commodities, like oil. China might bring prices down a bit in the short term by adding supply, but ultimately all will be bought up by the highest bidders, who currently seem to have insatiable demand, unlimited funding, and are hell-bent on wrecking the consumer market.
Eventually the money will run out. The spending is insane with very low demonstrable payoff.
I get that companies like Anthropic and SpaceX are claiming >25% of worldwide GDP as their TAM, but those numbers make zero sense. Zero.
Rational me agrees with you. But I’m worried that too large a portion of the globe’s growth is coming from AI right now. I feel like they will try to string this out for as long as possible.
Trump will sanction them and hopefully Europe will grow some balls and things might improve that waym
Briefly for GPUs, yes. I picked up a 5080 at the end of last year for msrp.
I know a safe technology we can switch to and it runs on Linux!
Actually Linux ran with it, but the teacher reprimanded Linux and Debby Ann got it back.
When the great AI bubble bursts, there is chance that the chip manufacturers are not only going to suddenly have a drop in demand, but also their surplus stock will be competing with a nearly new second hand market that may be flooded with stock from collapsed companies unless those companies are fully bought out by their competitors without any attempt at loss recovery.
At least that is my unrealistic hope and I'm sticking to it.
My misleado-sense is tingling with this article. For one, they don't compare YoY, they just show the 15% price hike and scream "Panic! Buy now!". Also some of those msrp's are ridiculous. ( i.e. 430$ for a 5060ti 16gb? Not sure about the US but in europe it never really went below 500€ )
In my area at least Intel's B580 hasn't risen a penny since its release. Why is no one talking about it?
Because people know Intel doesn't hold a candle to any of the competition so there is no demand for the cards. Nvidia and AMD can get away with their bullshit because people still buy their cards. And Intel is using older gen vram
I made the mistake of buying Intel's B70 to mess with local AI inference and quickly learned how shit their software stack is. They can't even be bothered to make the card work well for the only thing it's made for...
My B580 works just fine for games. If anything, in Linux at least, it's NVidia's drivers that are absolute shit and problem-prone
Yeah my B580 on Linux started doing great once I upgraded my motherboard to a new enough chipset to be supported. Before that it was kind of hilarious.
Because it has risen in price and availability is so sparse. Intel is playing under the same rules of scarcity as everybody else. There's simply less of these cards to go around as well. There's not a huge market available.
Base model has been sold out for a while. My closest Microcenter hasn't had them since last year. You could actually get them at MSPR($250) for a while too. The next cheapest version is a 3rd party model that has been siting at $290-$310 for most of the year now. Then there are these $500+ models that are basically collectors items at that price. Ebay is the wild west of prices and they're all $100 past where they're reasonable. Ebay's not a super trustable source either. Everything on NewEgg that is sitting at $250 is refurbished. The one new base model they have is almost $600. It makes no sense.
I've been in the market for one of these cards to replace my 5700xt. It's been a wild year keeping track of these prices. At times it is the best card available, and at other times you're playing a guessing game with older but stronger AMD stock. The kicker is the 12GB of VRAM. There's nothing in the price range of the Arc with that much VRAM. But there's also cards with less VRAM that are supposed to be more performant. As much as I want one, I'm probably gonna wait till the holiday season to see availability and sales. That's been the game since last year.

Never heard of that site. One quick visit tells me it's Canadian. Arc B580 is listed at $359.99 and it's out of stock. In fact the three models they do have are all out of stock.
hm, weird. It was in stock in my local store. The price is in CAD, which is about 260 USD. That explains it though.
