As this point I kinda just assume that any politician or thought leader that is loudly and publicly against something is doing that very thing in secret.
These people are - willingly or not - destroying the trustworthiness of politics as a whole by their actions. Punishments for crimes committed while holding a public office should have an integrated multiplier for damaging the trust into politics as a whole.
Abso-fucking-lutely. I feel very strongly something like that should exist for cops in particular.
Maybe a tiered system - the higher up you are, the heavier the multiplier gets.
Street Cop maybe a 1.5x multiplier (those aren't soo far away from common citizens and can't set policy), local politics, Police unit leaders 2x, federal level, police chiefs 3x, international level (think EU or UN, Interpol, secret services) 5x, with prison becoming mandatory for actual crimes (not administrative charges like parking tickets. Fines should be income-based in any case - the multiplier should apply to those too) on the federal level or above.
End all qualified immunity. Public servants lawyers costs can be forwarded by the state during a case and can be covered by the state (or the suing party if they are found to have started a frivolous lawsuit) if found innocent, which should be enough security if they are actually working for the people. I do not see a reason why a politician should have better protection from getting sued than a common citizen.
I would be thrilled to see how politics would evolve in such an environment, where using a smear campaign against a political opponent on local level can cost you 10% of your yearly income as a fine on a first offense, before even talking about a civil case. Politics would become a lot more honest.
The most oniony part is hidden at the end of the article:
The victim mother and daughter met the defendant while on vacation in 2021 and began living together at the defendant's home starting the following year.
Although the mother was a housekeeper on paper, she never received a salary.
Swiss immigration authorities determined that they had entered into a false contract to obtain residency permits and ordered them to pay a fine of 2,160 francs (approx. 3.9 million KRW) and leave Switzerland.
"Sorry for what happened, and even tho it is obvious that you were essential a victim of slavery by our politician, pay this fine and fuck off so we don't have to care for your sorry ass"
The crazy part is they forced the woman and her daughter to live at the place were the abuse happened for months before offering them a new appartment.
The cherry on the cake 1 day or so before this case was known to the public, the party of that monster rejected a law that would help the victims by making sure they get a livable income while they can't work for themselves because of the trauma.
Also extra points to the SRG (swiss national broad caster) for keeping the name of the monster anonymous eventhough their party has been trying to defund them as they are not partial acvording to them. It took the victim to go to another publication for the name zo come out.
I can’t think of a way to make that politician any more hypocritical. It’s fucking insane.

Making the slave pay a fine for being a slave is a pretty oniony thing.
