A lot of people in the west really drink the whole 'free society' koolaid and think western nations are just too enlightened to manipulate public opinion in that way. It's something evil authoritarian regimes like China or DPRK would do, couldn't possibly happen here.
i don't blame them; you can easily wrap your head around a maga echo chamber, but it's much harder to do the same for an echo chamber that encompasses the entire global north plus its periphery if you're not even aware it exists to begin with.

Abstract expressionism was one so Pollock was fed alcohol by the CIA to splash paint around after stealing the idea from Janet Sobel
