The administration of United States President Donald Trump has proposed a rule to formalise a controversial fee for H-1B work visas to the US and charge $103,265 for these visa applications going forward.

The proposed fee for highly skilled foreign workers was published in the US Federal Register on Monday, and will now be subject to a 30-day public comment period, after which it could be finalised and put into practice by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It would dramatically increase the cost of visas that are in high use in recruiting workers in the tech, education and research sectors.

I fear this is just going to accelerate companies offshoring jobs in the professional services and tech spaces and severely hurt our research institutes... H1-Bs have definitely been used to drive down wages in certain industries but this doesn't seem to be an effective way of combatting that

The original 100k fee is still halted by a court injunction. This version has some slightly different terms, but the legal reasoning seems even more suspect.

key word that jumps to me is "application"

it's not unheard of for people to pay all of the exorbitant fees only to get denied for made up reasons and need to try again.
