Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Language/ัะทั‹ะบ/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

The state of the internet today: you need a giant text with the punchline because otherwise people won't watch a 50 seconds sketch

    [โ€“] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 90 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Here's the original without the giant, fuck-off text shoving the entire joke in your face the whole time.

    [โ€“] iknewitwhenisawit@fedinsfw.app 18 points 1 week ago (3 children)

There must be something wrong with YouTube, because it says that was uploaded 18 years ago.

    [โ€“] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know, right? Hey, did you see that there's a new Llamas with Hats?

    [โ€“] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

    That kills people!

    [โ€“] toynbee@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

Did you know that YouTube was originally created to document the Janet Jackson incident?

    [โ€“] ChaosMonkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wdym, it was actually uploaded 18 years ago.

    [โ€“] palordrolap@fedia.io 10 points 1 week ago

I believe they are exhibiting denial that YouTube could possibly be old enough to have videos uploaded 18 years ago.

This denial is being done mostly in jest to cover the true, creeping, dripping, existential despair that so much time has passed, but at the same time to commiserate and laugh with others who are similarly affected. Drip, drip, tick, tick, tick.

Also, the video turns 19 in a couple of months. yaaaaay

    [โ€“] mmmm@sopuli.xyz 28 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Been using linux since 2006 and this is the first time I see an ad for it. Well done.

    [โ€“] ranzispa@mander.xyz 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I remember suse making quite a few back in the days, some were pretty nice.

    [โ€“] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

SUSE has an entire library of musical parodies. Some of them actually slap. This one is my favorite.

    [โ€“] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago

SUSE parodies remind me of when tech competition was actually fun. <3

    [โ€“] hexagonwin@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

fyi you probably wanna cut the parameter in url after video id as it may identify you

    [โ€“] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Thanks, I rarely share anything on my phone and I think I got lazy from relying on a browser extension to remove those. I appreciate the heads up.

IBM made ads for Linux in the beginning of the 2000s. Most were a bit weird.

Here's one with Sisko (Avery Brooks): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJA9eiUktcA

    [โ€“] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

This ad was made just 2 years after you started.

    [โ€“] Frenchgeek@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 week ago

So will Microsoft, to their cloud.

    [โ€“] Grass@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

maybe circle the overlaid punchline in red next time so I don't miss the joke

    [โ€“] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago

And add some Subway Surfers or Skylanders footage so I don't scroll away in the first half-second.

    [โ€“] justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

geez that tux looks creepy af xD Love it!

    [โ€“] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Like that Panda commercial where it'd stare people down and then wreck their desks in a rage. Lmao

    [โ€“] justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago

i just saw some commercial (don't remember about what) with a panda explaining the product and i thought exactly of the "don't mess with panda" spots xD

    [โ€“] TwodogsFighting 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Apparently, Linux can't even get people to spell 'losing' correctly.

    [โ€“] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

It has me loosing my grammar corrections. X_X

    [โ€“] daggermoon@piefed.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I still have more questions than answers.

lucky you. you have the Information Highwayยฉยฎโ„ข at your fingertips

    [โ€“] ideonek@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Joke is allways funnier when you start with the point.

    [โ€“] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

That way I know what is coming and won't risk having my expectations subverted.

    [โ€“] ideonek@piefed.social 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

As we know, surprise is a comedy killer.

    [โ€“] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

    OH MY GOD!

    Shit. You scared me!

    [โ€“] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I gotta say, "living embodiment of Linux as a Christ figure" was not something I expected to see today.

I was hoping Tux would have a persona more like Dr. Cox, sweeping in nonchalantly to save the patient while badgering the interns for being incompetent

    [โ€“] LemmyPlaceDN@europe.pub 1 points 1 week ago

Linux is my personal savior. You can make a religion out if this!

    [โ€“] Danitos@reddthat.com 3 points 1 week ago

This is one of those "it's so bad that it's good" movies. Love it.

    [โ€“] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There is a difference between macOS and Linux.

    [โ€“] onlinepersona@programming.dev 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yes, MacOS is corporate surveillance crap and Linux isn't.

    [โ€“] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Took the words out of my mouth. I mean they weren't in there, but I am glad you said it for us.

    [โ€“] JATtho@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

*If you install a light weight distro close to the mainline ones.

    [โ€“] bedwyr@piefed.ca -1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It is, too late, for my PC.

The C drive is full despite me having very little saved, some music, some openoffice docs, that's it. Idk how to clean it or wipe it, every folder under C seems empty yet the space is full.

    [โ€“] hexagonwin@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

i guess you're on windows? use treesize or wiztree and find what uses space

    [โ€“] bedwyr@piefed.ca 3 points 1 week ago
    [โ€“] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

    Wiztree my beloved

    [โ€“] palordrolap@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Given your apparent technical level, I think you need to get your PC to someone who can work on it in person.

If you had space and better technical skills, there are tools you could install to help you track down where all the space is in use, but I don't feel confident that things would go well talking you through that on an Internet forum.

    [โ€“] bedwyr@piefed.ca 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I am not stupid just never learned computer stuff more than I had too. My focus is elsewhere. I can and will do it myself because that is my only option.

    [โ€“] palordrolap@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

Sorry, I never meant to imply you were stupid. Only that you didn't seem to be of a high enough technical level - right now - to be able to solve your PC problems.

As for (non-committal) further advice: Backups, backups, backups. And then a tool like WinDirStat to track down what's using all your space. There are YouTube videos that show you how to use it.
