I don't get Firefox at work, and the other day Chrome popped open a new tab on it's own telling me to try out Gemini. I asked Gemini why this new tab had opened pushing Gemini on me when I didn't ask it to, and it told me the most likely reason was that my computer is infected with a virus.

Not wrong I guess?

Microsoft is as bad. As our IT admin, I have about 300 different ways to launch Copilot.

The most annoying was when they changed it so that going to office.com went to a Copilot chat window instead of allowing me to select the MS Office apps such as SharePoint and OneDrive.

Bloody Notepad has a Copilot button now!

Are you enjoying the uninstallable and non-corporate configurable installation of OneDrive photos?

[–] OddDeer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 2 weeks ago

Or you could just... you know... not use Google.

There was one Huge AI blocklistfilter too, I use that with ublock origin. Helps when other search engines don't cut it ¯\(ツ)

[–] flameleaf@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

If I remember correctly that one blocks every site that has AI. This one just removes AI from pages were it's annoying (like google search).

When making your search, type "-ai" at the end. For example:

How tall is the Eiffel tower -ai

You're welcome.

This doesn't work about 80% of the time.

[–] red_tomato@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But 20% of the time, it works every time

[–] schmorpel@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

ShitGPT, how much is every time of 20% ?

There are also html-only and lite versions of ddg

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 5 points 2 weeks ago

And that can be set as your browser's custom default search provider

I kept accidentally summoning the AI assistant on my mom's tablet so I told it to fuck off. It was like "words can hurt!" So I told it to fuck off again.

Firefox has tons of extensions to remove/hide/block AI overview in Google searches. Just search "Google AI" on their extensions page and you'll get nearly a dozen extensions to choose from.

[–] darkangelazuarl@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Or just stop using Google. Hit them where it hurts.

[–] trem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

In the past, I'd sometimes use Google for image reverse search, when the other engines didn't turn up anything. Since they integrated that AI overview, that's basically broken, as it only shows relevant results for maybe 10% of my queries.

I don't know how they managed to break that, like I'm not on the AI overview tab. I just want the functionality they supported for the past 10+ years.

[–] eatCasserole@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

They had to make it worse so that the number of queries would go up. When you find what you were looking for on the first try, it doesn't make number go up!

Literally this is what happened and why it's so bad now.

[–] aloofPenguin@piefed.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

they made Google lens ai, and it SUCKS. I tried 2 queries on the same exact image and it returned completely different results...

looking for alternatives now, though doubt there will be many.

[–] dwemthy@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

https://tenbluelinks.org/ has a good setup to make a non AI version of Google your browser's default search
Of course that's assuming you specifically want to such with Google

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

This method worked on Firefox for me, on desktop as well as mobile. Haven't tried it on Chrome because I figured I could use it if I get desperate trying to find something.

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Keep asking it questions until it doesn't want to answer you anymore because you cost so much money /s

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Just keep asking "why" like a 4 year old. See how deep the rabbit hole goes

[–] SalmonTractor@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 weeks ago

Is there a browser plugin to constantly query their AI in the background? Wasting their power might send a message.

[–] vanillama@programming.dev 3 points 2 weeks ago

I add a query parameter to go to web search, rather than the default search, so no slop here

Oookay just tried this to find a manuals of my microwave.... Just works. Much like I had to role play with the fucking engine couple says ago till it found the correct manual.

Thanks.

For anyone still using Google: is there actually some easter egg for when you try to do that or something?

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Turning off google AI overview is aimple;: stop using google

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

The chatbot has history. So it's just trying to remove the Nvidia rtx5090 from her throat.
