Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it's one of the best things I've ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.

For the past few months I'd been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I'd blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.

Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I'd had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.

The breaking point was seeing some dude post a "meme" implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you're saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell...

Gotta throw Hexbear, Lemmygrad, and Exploding Heads in there too if your instance hasn't defederated from 'em.

Pro russia propaganda is generally contained in ml own communities. The tiresome thing for me is zionist tolerant instances and communities and fake palestinians supporter who both side the colonizers and the colonized or defend rhe democrats support for the colonizers

[–] Auth@lemmy.world 1 points 6 minutes ago (1 children)

No I seem them regularly spreading pro russian propaganda and demeaning jabs against ukrainans in .world communities. The instance has to many disgusting users for it to be waved away with the "few bad apples" defense

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 3 minutes ago

My argument was not to say that there is only few bad apples on the ml just that in my experience I don't see their propaganda that much often outside of their bubble

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 55 minutes ago

My feeds pretty decent. I don't block instances outside of an accident. I block plenty of users and communities though and it works for me. Don't get me wrong the vast majority of my blocks is not that the communities are bad. just that its easier to block what your not interested in and peruse all than peruse subscribed if you want to find new things.

I''m much more upset about the much more prevalent imperialist propaganda hyping up the right wing democrats as saviors and presenting Luke warm social democrats as radicals to either support or hate but you seem to be a fan of this overwhelming disgusting support on this site for racism and imperialism.

Where? There's like three weirdo centrists that continually get swamped by progressive views. .World has a problem with its overuse of antisemitism as applied to antizionism, but centrist Democrat cheerleading is so far from a Lemmy-wide problem it's hard to believe you actually use it.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I find the whining and complaining more annoying.

It's easy to block content you don't want (or switch to software that supports it). If it annoys you, block it.

...thats literally what they did tho?

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Yeah but making a post about it is stupid, we're all blocking instances and users we don't like, it's like posting "tie your shoes if tripping on your laces feels tirening". Like what is this? a post for primary schoolers?

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 0 points 1 hour ago

we’re all blocking instances and users we don’t like

People commonly think that everybody else sort of thinks and acts the same way that they do. Sometimes it's that way, but a lot of the time it isn't. I didn't block a single instance until I think last week. (It was lemmy.ml, not too coincidentally.) That includes my six months on piefed, as well as the several years before that on lemmy.world. I had considered blocking them in the past, but it was only recently that several accounts from there started behaving super-aggressively to me.

I'm just reluctant to block entire instances because I feel like I'll miss out on something. But at this point, I think if you're still on lemmy.ml, then you're probably not somebody who I want to interact with. But that's because it's just famous for being tankies.

you know whats really annoying? u

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I suspect they're complaining about this thread where OP is griping about it, not the fact that OP blocked the instance.

People are people and we all hate drama but we all participate in drama, so y'know... heh

"Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist"

Which country do you consider yourself a leftist in?

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

THERE IS ONLY THE US

;-)

Lemmy.ml was/is my first foray into the whole thing and the dogma/irrationality/hivemind has been really disheartening (for a community I had figured would filter people like that out due to its' size relative to reddit or other normal websites). Thanks for this, i'm going to try it.

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Ive blocked dozens of instances because i dont like them. Just do it and move on -- no, nobody else was getting tired of lemmy because the rest of us block instances and users we dont like and enjoy our experience instead.

[–] narp@feddit.org 5 points 3 hours ago (7 children)

When I joined Lemmy, Lemmy.ml didn't really feel different than Lemmy.world to me.

Maybe I'm taking crazy pills but it's like they got more propagandist on purpose. As if they decided to up the anthem because .grad got defederated by all sane instances.. And what's propaganda good for if it doesn't reach the right people?

Same with tankies having lemmy.world accounts. It's not ironic, it makes sense.

Now Lemmy.ml became their "outreach" instance, where they ban everyone who criticizes them (even on another instance) or even for downvoting (Dessalines did that because his favorite poster 'cowbee' got downvoted by "bots" too much. Then they opted out on lemvotes, so no more checking yourself).

For an outsider it looks like everyone agrees with them because they upvote each other and every critic got either banned or they blocked them themselves and I'm starting to think this might be by design. I wonder how many users are banned from .ml, while still retaining general visibility through federation.

Isn't it basically how Russia and China operate? Keep your own people isolated in a bubble where only your narrative is accepted and at the same time invade other spaces to manipulate their opinions?

Feddit.org is literally the zionist version of the tsnkis

Having mindless tankies parrot ccp and russian propaganda is getting tiring.

i'm new to my nstance that isn't defederated from anything and I see an awful lot of whining about .ml hexbear and lemmygrad but i haven't seen the users do anything. i'm more annoyed by the whiners so far.

Don't be surprised if you find hexbear giving you similar twitches.

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 hours ago

Their instance was already defederated from hexbear, so they never saw posts from there.

This post made me curious so I took a look at my block list, and almost all of my blocked accounts are from .world. I've only blocked two .ml users. I wonder how much that varies by instance.
