You just took a shit on human creativity and posed it as a discussion about whether human creativity should be shit on.
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

AI music is objectively good
Asserting a point of view about art — an inherently subjective medium — all while claiming that it's objective is probably one of the most blatantly idiotic things a person can possibly say and stand behind. And that's not even mentioning how you're literally on a community all about opinions.
Regardless you definitely posted this in the right place so credit where credit's due I suppose. Enjoy your algorithmically-generated slop. A poorly-made piece of art with real human soul and intent behind it will always be infinitely better than even the best possible "creation" of the product of automated theft and assembly of human knowledge and creation.
Wow. Horrible take. Unpopular for a reason. Upvoted.
There's a time I may have agreed with you but there's too much good music out there, and other fans of the same artists that there isn't a need for AI music imo. Also I hate the idea of using AI for art
This is a very good unpopular opinion. It's actually unpopular and outs the user as an AI bro who wouldn't know how to make a decent beat to save their life.
I can't wrap my mind around this at all. Music is the result of people making music. If there is no artist, no perspective or feelings it's just sounds.
Sure I can't sing, so what I as an average person make could not even charitably be called music either, but that is not the point - I want to go to concerts and see bands play music, and want computers to do grunt work that people don't want to do, so that more of us can do better things.
Using an AI to make musical sound just undermines all that. Tech in music being wielded by humans, yes that is music (DJs) and if machines ever develop sentience I will call their sounds music, but not before.

"it's just sounds"
So, straying from the conversation about AI music being good or whatever. This is the part of AI music that perplexes me the most. So like... Audio is a wave. You can take a sine wave, and a square wave and layer them on top and you get a sine wave with some square edges because it's both sounds. Different frequencies for different pitches, all of that.
When AI makes music, is it just drawing that wave? If so, that's fucking crazy. Like I could understand if it used some ingested music theory to write chords and a melody, then turn them into MIDI, then run those through a synth plugin. But AI doesn't have a synth plugn. It just knows what a synth plugin sounds like through analasys of sound waves, right? Like AI can't "hear" music. It doesn't know what a cello sounds like. It just knows what the sample point values of a waveform of a cello sounds like. But then if you tell the AI to add an instrument. Let's say an electric guitar. It knows how to re-draw that wave to actually make that sound. To add reverb? To add compression? Then more instruments?
If that's how it actually works, that blows my god damned mind. No human could ever write a song by drawing a line on paper and scanning it in. I suppose they could, but it would be some avant garde experimental thing, not something that sounds like actual instruments. Like I don't think a human could ever figure out how to draw the sound of fingers sliding down the frets of an acoustic guitar between the actually strumming of a guitar.
It's fucking bonkers.
Not even waves just ones & zeros, creating a map. Yeah it's crazy.
I do wonder if the visual representation of music sounds like that would look like art.
See music notes as letters and different type of sound (trumpet, piano, guitar, etc) as a style of writing.
LLMs being good at processing text, music is adjacent to this. Music styles tend to have common elements between them and the LLMs can be trained on the similarities and to predict them, just like text prediction.
Man this is the worst fucking take I've heard all week

Hey, I get it, you just have zero respect for the effort, creativity, imagination, or sacrifice that an artist has to put in to create a work thats any good. To you, art is merely a product. Who cares who made it, how it was made, or what it even means, or if there was any meaning at all.
I totally understand. I went to the store yesterday and they had this hand crafted chair made of high quality wood for sale for like $300. Fuck that! I'll just go buy a cheap plastic piece of garbage chair pumped out by the thousands in a Chinese factory. I mean it's just a chair, right? It has one job, who cares what it's made of. "Quality, Shmality!" I say.
I just wish more people would understand this, like I entered this fighting game tournament last month. But I'm really ass at Street Fighter, so instead I wrote this bot that would play the game for me so I'd win with double perfect every time. Can you belive they kicked me out for cheating? CHEATING! What kind of shit is that? I just used a helpful tool to totally do all the work for me as I sat back and gave broad parameters. The audacity of these people!
I enjoyed Mr. Krabs singing Stronger.
jesus man, music - art - is about feeling something. what the fuck
Unsettling is a feeling of sorts
that is insightful.
Just sucks the ai learned it by stealing. Valid take though, I guess. It feels a lot like saying, "factory farming is great for me. All I care about is meat that tastes decent. That's it."
I hate every sentence I just read. Take the upvote. AI music is the music for people who say they like all kinds of music. Music with no taste. Its like saying you could cook a potato a million ways but your favorite is raw.
Edit: since the music you posted is a pale imitation of trip hop please listen to something with some artistic value that might make you feel something.
i’ll take that muzak/“average radio slop” isn’t bad. but is the energy involved really worth it, to just get muzak out of it?
That for sure is an unpopular opinion and I also strongly disagree.
So, take my upvote ;-)
Apart from that, In my experience there is such an incredibly large pool of great music I haven't even heard yet, that the avalanche of AI generated music does not even improve the useful quantity for an individual in a significant way, not even talking about the quality.
Unpopular, yes, but also an objectively wrong use of objectively. Subjectively you find that music enjoyable, but objectively it's a statistical average of the bog standard crap you can find on on basically any radio station. Nobody can stop you from enjoying that, but don't think it makes your personal taste anything other than statistically average.
I have a very pragmatic view on music
You're quite self aware in your assessment, you just don't realize that being "pragmatic" about music is like being "efficient" about sex; you're doing it wrong.
It violates my sense of decency that you think a communicative medium can be replaced by something that can't communicate.
... You get a upvote but I'll be mad the entire time doing it
I can’t believe nobody’s called you out on not knowing what “objectively” means yet.
There are several uses for music. For some of them, AI music like you pasted works well -- like if those were playing as background music in a restaurant there's no problem. You're not there to listen to the music.
But if you want to really listen to the music... you usually want to listen to old songs or then something totally new and interesting. Your links were none of those. It was sophisticated elevator music.
Then again, I don't see any reason why AI couldn't some day be able to compose something new and interesting. A lot of the music humans create is derivative. The spigot of really new stuff has been kinda dry since the 90s it seems to me.
