I love Linux and all, but I think this post is kinda

    [–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 6 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

The problem is that games like LoL or Valorant are kinda made so that you "need" to have a dedicated LoL PC. You're not supposed to install these games on your main PC. Because these games are so highly competitive with real cash prizes involved, the devs ask for more control over your PC than typical games. It's not a Windows vs Linux thing, it's about control.
I'm not condoning this practice but it helps to understand why the situation is like this.

    [–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 11 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

What percentage of players even do those competitive things though? Surely you could have an option to turn the orwellian anticheats off for regular players and only enabled for ~~the sweaty wankers~~ competitive players.

    [–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

    It's deeper.

    • Stopping you from running without checks it makes it harder to develop cheats.
    • Keeping it off linux keeps them from having to support linux (small base, big effort)

The profit isn't there, so they're not going to do it.

    [–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

idk but there's probably dozens of those. I don't know what Rito are thinking and I kinda don't want to. Intrusive anti cheat doesn't work but those companies don't care. Unfortunately, in the rat race between cheaters and anti cheat devs, actually developing a game solidly such that cheating is basically impossible has not been thought of yet. I also suspect """"""micro"""""" transactions are a major driving factor here.

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

What do you mean it doesn’t work? As much as I hate having to keep a windows partition for the occasional game of league, Vanguard has made a huge difference in Masters+ games.

    [–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Anti cheat will always be bypassed. BF6, requiring secure boot, had cheats during the open beta. And this will always be true due to the nature of how computers work. You would need to have a dedicated computing device that does nothing but play a specific game in order to ensure cheating isn't possible; think tamagochi but for league of legends.

    [–] SorryQuick@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

That doesn’t change the fact that there used to be a cheater every ~10 games, now I don’t think I’ve seen a single one since Vanguard. It doesn’t have to catch 100% of cheaters, if it went from catching 10% to 99.99% that’s a massive win.

    [–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

honestly idk how much of a diff it makes and I really don't care. I wholeheartedly disagree that it's a massive win if the system catches a few cheaters if the system is designed around "guilty until proven innocent".
It's absolutely possible to design a game in a way that makes cheating basically impossible or severely nerfs it without an anti-cheat. And even if you didn't want to do that, the fact that dedicated servers have become a incredibly rare sight also contributes to this issue.
It's all for the bottom line. Spend as little time in development as possible and extract as much money from players as possible, at all costs.
I just can't sit here and say kernel level anti-cheat is good if it works.

    [–] ISolox@lemmy.world 17 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

This really isn't a W. Even though I don't play any of these games, Ive had friends who have had a real interest in switching to Linux, but didn't because they couldn't play LOL or Valorant.

It's not really linux's fault by any means, but it's no W.

    [–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

That's like wanting to try vaping to help you stop smoking but never doing it because you can't find nicotine vapes that taste that specific burning shit flavor you're used to.

They can keep that shit on windows. The anti cheat will probably evolve to include AI bullshit like nanny assistants to make sure you're using your computer like a human is supposed to and live facial identify verification to make sure you're watching the anti cheat ads they'll start playing when you die.

    [–] embed_me@programming.dev 7 points 19 hours ago

    Yea it's a joke

    [–] binux@sh.itjust.works 2 points 19 hours ago

The joke is that those games suck so bad that even having the option to play them on any form of Linux would make said OS worse

    [–] Jimbo@pawb.social 21 points 1 day ago

Even if they did work, no way I would ever use kernel level anticheat

    [–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If they did, maybe their communities would be less toxic.

    [–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 57 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know about that. The Linux community has its own brand of toxic issues too. Try bringing up systemd or rust.

    [–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 41 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Systemd!? What did you just cram into PID 1, you bloated binary blob? You are nothing to me but just another sprawling dependency graph masquerading as an init system. I will chmod -x you out of existence with a precision the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Unix was written, mark my words. You think you can get away with saying "one process should do everything" over the internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of grey neckbeards across the mailing lists and your commit history is being traced right now so you better prepare for the fork. The fork that wipes out the pathetic little monolith you call an init system. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

As a former MOBA enjoyer, IMO MOBA games inherently rage bait their players and make toxicity inevitable long term regardless of whose playing.

    [–] DScratch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’m seeing a bunch of toxicity in the milsim Arma. But based on a recent interaction, that has more to do with cross play with PlayStation users than anything else.

    [–] Enkrod@feddit.org 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I haven't played Arma in nearly years. The community, even in DayZ (mod) used to be relatively chill. Especially compared to more fast paced shooters. I can only remember one person I seriously would prefer die slowly and painfully who I met in Arma.

    [–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

I play COD on Linux, just older ones that have mod tools.

Deadlock and cs2 is sweaty enough for me

    [–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And no FIFA or whatever the fuck it is called now

    [–] dustyData@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

PES was always superior anyways. They own the license now. It's called eSoccer. EA had to change to FC. They can't use FIFA stuff anymore.

    [–] Rumo161@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Dota 2 is working totaly fine so whats up about that 😐?

    [–] GardenData61371@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

It's too different compared to lol

    [–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

    Easy, dota 2 isnt fun

    [–] buran@lemmy.today 3 points 21 hours ago

I wanted to play Fortnite again but after seeing Epic to approve the AI Slop in their shop, I deleted my account and never looked back.

    [–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

These games do some SCP-level containment for everyone sane in this hobby.

    [–] NCSK@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

    why, otherwise you'd play it?

    [–] Starski@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I do however wish I could play rust, tarkov(less so these days), HUNGER, and battlefield 1, but I can deal without those things I guess.

    [–] picklerick@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

maybe if they did we could break 5% market share to 6!

    [–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

    Not worth it

    [–] Staff@piefed.world 1 points 1 day ago

    Let us pray πŸ™

    [–] zewm@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Ironic that this post is in itself being toxic to people that enjoy the titles mentioned.

I enjoy cod and lol and even Fortnite but cannot play them on Linux. I’m sad that I can’t enjoy the things that I enjoy. I still play league on my MacBook but it’s annoying having to switch systems for one game. I would love to be able to play ** any ** game of my choosing and not be harassed about it.

Try getting help for trivial Linux issues and you have a 50/50 chance of having a Linux elitist eat you alive for not already knowing what they know. RTFM and scoffing.

Linux has the same toxic ratio of users that the games this post is pointing out.

    [–] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The reason those games aren't on Linux is because of horrendous security overreach, and if they did work it would mean something, somewhere has been compromised in order to make that possible. I'm thankful they don't work because the last thing I want is for game devs to have kernel-level access to my machine so they can dictate what I'm allowed to do on my computer.

    [–] otter@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I don't think that's what the user is asking for though. I read it as wishing that the games didn't have those security requirements, so that they could play the games on Linux.

The joke in the meme isn't "thank you to Linux maintainers for not compromising security", its a joke about those games themselves.

Also their point about toxicity is valid, and I've found that it varies by distro. Without being specific, in case I just had a bad experience, some support communities were very hostile to users asking questions. If the new person didn't phrase their question perfectly, using all the correct terminology, the support person refused to answer the question. It was a thread of "You said X, but X actually means Y, so I don't understand your question. Did you mean Z", when it is obvious from context what they meant.

    [–] zewm@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

    Thanks for understanding πŸ™

    [–] KernelTale@programming.dev 2 points 22 hours ago

As an ex league addict I do think that league makes people worse and I hope Riot's CEO will hang.
