I too think it's related, but this makes me think; why didnt other countries develop a similar anarchist movement that period? Or did they? Hmm
greece had it worst. some other countries were also in bad condition, namely spain and portugal, but greece had to be collectively bailed out or it would go bankrupt. but i was just watching it from behind several borders, so some greek might have more insight.
Greek conservatives are also pretty notably clownish in general, like, more than average.
Related question: does this mean that Greece is a good place to live for anarchists, or exactly the opposite? (Genuine question)
In one hand anarchists there provide public services which is good, on the other hand the violent police force often beat up suspected anarchists unprovoked.
I like that we have lots of squats and anarchist places with events to attend to, lots of protests with anarchist blocks to participate and of course many anarchists to spend my time with:)
Currently this period is a pre-election period though (we'll have elections in ~half a year max) and the current right wing gov is campaigning by dealing with "terrorists" by arresting various anarchists (and not only anarchist I guess) and blaming the left for polarization and hate-speech. So we have increased police violence these days (and this gov in general has been increasing the police power in its 2 4-year term). It's tough and we'll have to somehow make it through.
Eitherway, I think I'd find it hard to live anywhere else, mayyybe in spain/france/italy, wherever there are strong anarchist communities and the climate is mediterranean:)
I used to think what we have here in greece was maybe slightly elevated levels of anarchism, but I guess I was far off of reality. A bit sad, cause I kinda had hopes outside might be more active, hmm. But hey, it's nice to be in an environment with strong anarchism:)
About the why, I'd like to see any analyses to this. I guess a good point in history to investigate is December of 2008 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Greek_riots
