The sound of that liquid mercury shaking around make's my skin crawl

He says the mercury vapors are very dangerous. Then he use a vacuum pump to drain the bulbs. By doing so, isn't he releasing mercury vapors in this workshop or outside air ? Am I misunderstanding how this pump operates ?

Normally fume hoods have filters on the output. Some toxic elements still release into the atmosphere but at much lesser quantity. Dirty filters are then disposed of properly as a toxic waste.
