Self Improvement

508 readers
2 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.

I had a good week again. Spent the longest contiguous period out of the house in years - just under 8 hours and I held it together. Went to 1 demo, 1 meeting, 1 march. I've spent a lot of time with my new friend and honestly she's a great influence on me.

Next week I'm planning to go to 1 meeting, 1 peer support group, 1 action (nothing spicy), and 1 march. And hopefully I'll hear back about a voluntary role I applied for. I've really got my fingers crossed for this one because they're a very cool group who are providing a very important service.

  • Dropped the ball at work last week, so used it as an excuse to make apology cookies. (I’m framing it as me just being nice and baking stuff)

  • Started a new book. It’s Bill Nye (yeah I’m a LIB , but so are you.)

  • Trying to balance applying for “real” full-time work while my job has become full-time for the summer.

What is the book about?

I lost weight. Like 8KG. Im pretty much at my ideal weight. You might laugh but I think switching from sugary drinks to zero variants might have made quite a bit of a differences. Plus some other dietary changes I did like 0 sport to achieve this btw. I should do more sports I know sorry :3

Took me about 8-10months though.

Congrats on the weight loss! catgirl-salute

Do you have a next goal/plan or are you chilling?

I would probably say I want to focus just on improving my stamina. I got a exercise bike from my parents and I wanna try and tackle doing regular rounds on that.

I don't know where else to post this, hopefully it's ok. Working on corporate software for so long dulls the mind. I decided to implement the A* pathfinding algorithm as an exercise.

Context for non-computer touchers: the red squares are trying to find their way to me(the blue square) on a 64x64 grid. The green squares are the path that they are calculating. When I click my mouse I create purple squares which serve as barriers that alter the shortest path from the red squares to me.

You can definitely post this here! I'm not a programmer but I know pathfinding from video games. Are you working on a videogame?

I didn't intend to but I might. I have been tinkering with this more since I posted it. There's just something about the cycle of breaking and fixing your work that makes me remember why I love programming.

Good luck and keep us updated! catgirl-salute

Do you have a favourite video game?

Therapy was good today, talked about some heavy stuff again. But I feel like I've made improvement because I can more easily open up about myself and share details. My therapist and I have decided I don't need to work on my ex anymore since I am now pretty much at peace with the end of that relationship, so progress! Didn't really get the chance to walk this week with the heat and wild fire smoke, I don't know when the smoke will clear out.

Got better at pulling walls for pottery! My walls were definitely more even but the inside of my mugs were kinda curved and after watching some videos I think next week will be even better comfy-cool

Also showed self restraint at work and didn't get petty revenge on my coworker even though it wouldve been so easy. I didnt even feel the desire to which is so different from how I used to be
