At this point I think Musk, Thiel and the rest of plutocrats are a bigger danger than Russia and China combined

Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed
- on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons), archive:is,ph,today (their JS DDoS websites)
- on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
- on Hungary: Euronews
Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com
(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)
Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)
Eu: agrees to proceed with chatcontrol even though a majority voted against (but not an absolute majority)
Also EU: ohno Russia is a threat to our DeMoCrAcY
(Yes EU =/= EU but fuck that sounds very stupid to read one after another)
a majority voted against
Twice... because they already refused to accept the result the first time.
Wasn't that the third time already now?
Oh, chat control in general much more even.
But this specific vote by the parliament when they rejected to extend this bullshit chat control 1.0 temporary exception was instantly repeated within a week because the right-wing morons didn't like the result. They got the same one again, so they now cheated and introduced the same thing again via the EU commision instead, one day before the summer break when not enough parliament members were still there to reject it a third time.
How this can be legal is beyond me
If something was voted against, just pushing it again is real bullshit and shouldn't be allowed
Democracy for the leadership, not the peasants!
Oh, are you guys finally ready to talk about why the EU is bad? Now that it has effected you personally?
Edit: Looks like y'all still aren't ready for it.
The main problem lies with the politicians people voted for in each country's elections (who are then reflected in the European Council and the Commission), not the EU as a concept or even as a set of institutions, or at least, not entirely so in the latter case.
"This is because of individuals and their moral impurity, never the system." yup, that's a Euro.
Read again until the very end. I didn't say that. π
A: it's one sentence, I read it multiple times.
B: yes, that is what you said. Whether or not you understand the ideas you're talking about is a different thing from what you said. Yes, it is refusing to acknowledge the systemic failures of a fundamentally imperialistic and capitalistic system when you attribute its typical behaviour to simply mistakes made by those who participate in its elections. Nobody who is going to genuinely challenge this system is going to be in those positions, let alone achieve the level of impact necessary to avoid policies like these (that passes with a minority vote anyway).
Read again.
What are you talking about??
The many times people in this community flipped shit when I said the EU was imperialistic and favourable to authoritarian politics. Now that there is an obvious example of how that looks, apparently many of you have known this the whole time. Just pointing out the humour in that, Euros are horribly uncritical of their way of life generally.
apparently many of you have known this the whole time.
Many do but they are not the majority and people in general don't write comments to be downvoted.
You're saying you think it's good to not criticize something morally wrong for fear of losing internet points?
It's enough that it is not motivating so people don't reply as often as they could.
Right, so I'm correct in saying that many of you have apparently known this whole time, and yet only talk about it when it effects you. I'm saying that people in this community are cowardly and uncritical. Fear of criticizing something due to the most minute consequences of people on the internet getting mad at you is not something I find relatable or acceptable when so much of the fascism we are currently dealing with has been facilitated through online culture.
Trolls used to be good and funny. Man i miss those times...
Are you having a stroke
Just another lost mind :/ Tragic
Yes, there it is. Have fun with the surveillance state.
what does "eu is bad" have to do with "eu says russia is bad"?
You should probably read the article that talks about what its done because of that notion.
That's fair, I didn't read the article.
i call out the eu as a threat to the democratic integrity of the eu
There are many dual use tools that can also be used to silence an opposition. There is a huge risk of abuse and it worries me that they don't prominently and proudly show any measures that they are taking to prevent abuse. Do they exist?
Ensure faster responses by platforms in combatting electoral interference, particularly bot-driven efforts.
Clearly distinguish synthetic content from authentic material, and give more prominence to independent and verified sources.
